Hi

My lads 2007 Defender 2.4 tdci engine with 300K km's is dead ! He got oil pressure warning light , towed him home and dropped the sump to find the oil pump pick up filter blocked full of crap . Cleaned, new pump and sump but the damage has already been done makes a right racket from the top end.

Want advice for a new engine please ?

Ford transit 2.4 tdci engines are a lot cheaper than the Defender obviously, don't want to take the risk with second hand ! There are so many supposedly refurbished engines out there, new engines which are completely naked etc .

Any help much appreciated please !

Do not buy off any of the companies who sell on lowest price with supply and fitting, if you are going to keep the car I would test the waters price wise with Land Rover themselves.
Any 2nd hand tranny engine is going to be tired to say the least.

Thanks Lynall ! Oh yes definitely a keeper ! You don’t sell your pride and joy !
Just noticed that there is actually an article in Land Rover monthly about changing a puma engine for a crated by IRB Developments ?

Could always change some top,end bits

What’s it going to be that’s suffered ? Cams ? Worth doing ?
Dilemma we have with a new stripped lump swapping everything over from a 300k lump :-(

No nearer with this !
Stripped engine from LR in France 6500 euro and full build with auxillarys 15000 euro !! lot of money for a crap engine !
whats the easiest alternative engine conversion ??

Does the french system allow you to change engines?

4 years ago my brother had the exact same problem, he bought a new crate engine and had it fitted by McDonald's of Oswestry.

Last week, and after 25k a conrod smashed a hole in the block, typically out of mileage and time guarantees and warranty.

He's now looking at a recon engine, and is starting to pull out the written off engine, I think his plan is to fit recon engine, then sell the vehicle and buy an older td5/tdi or series and v8 it. Totally pìssed off and unimpressed with two engine failures through no fault of his own. Crap engine imo, I've never liked it. My td5 is approaching 160k with absolutely no faults (touch wood).

Best of luck!

Thanks for shareing ! This is what my fear is !
Totaly agree with you we also have TD5's, 200tdi's and 300tdi;s in the family far older and abused that are absolutely faultless !

Yeh ! We did think about an engine change ! TD5 etc …. I think it would be a shame to change the 2.4 puma lump because it is (was ) a good powerful lump !
TD5 is a good conversion, lots of rusty chassis Discovery 2s.

Search on internet some bloke on lampeter did one.
