Hello all I came onto this forum a couple of weeks ago with the idea of putting a VW tdi engine into my freelander. After alot of thinking I have decided to put the 2.0 di engine in. Was wondering if anybody has done this conversion and if so how much work is entailed. I have almost a full donar diesel freelander minus back axle and prop shaft but main engine components ecu and all is intact.
Was wondering if I need to swap fuel tanks or just or just the neck of the tank. Also are the fuse boxes all wired up the same. Would I need to change ignition just the more tedious stuff if anyone has any info or input wud be greatly appreciated the engine swap is the easy bit

This question has been covered a few times befrore and generally the answer is - buy a 2.0 Di Freelander. There's alot that would need to change and for the arse it int worth it when you can pick up a DI with a fecked IRD for £800. You're better off putting the good bits of transmission from your 1.8 on your donor 2.0 if you have one.

This ^^^^^^^ ;)
It simply is'nt worth trying to make something you can already buy pretty cheaply.
It's not as simple as an engine change. You would need a good engine complete with ancillarys and it's matching gearbox, the complete engine loom including the engine ECU and alarm ECU, the correct dash, the diesel throttle pedal, the diesel fuel tank and filler neck, the exhaust system and probably the Abs unit as well!!
Simply not worth the effort ;)

Is it possible to make it better its very hard on fuel. I'm getting 21mpg although all driving is within 10 mile radius. I might just as wlwayne says put the 1.8 stuff on the diesel freebie it isn't a spur of the moment decision i have thought alot about it and i know it isn't really worth the hassle.is the axle and prop shaft the same on both 1.8 and 2.0di

The IRD, props, rear diff and VCU are the same I believe. 21 MPG is terrible there must be something very wrong or you drive like a loony! I don't tend to take mine over 3000rpm much at all and I get a reliable 27mpg combined.

What's wrong with the DI eggsakerly? Quite a bit of your 1.8 should fit on it.

yours does the same as mine now then ;)

his isn't getting chance to warm up so it will use more fuel imho :)

That's when I'm driving across town to meetings, 15min drive. If I go down to my GF's folks place in Coventry I get 31-32 :). I'm still running the EWP quite cold at just under 85 degrees, if I went up to 90 that figure would improve I expect. WHEN IT'S WORKING !!

not really checked what mine does on a run (strangely enough:confused:) but that sounds ok ;)

stop going on about it not running and get yer finger out :)

21 mpg from a 1.8!! That's worse than I get from my V6 in summer. It's down to 19 mpg in winter.

I wonder what mpg that would work out to??? Lol I filled it up the other day for 65 quid. the needle was in the red lol and it's down to just over half and I've done 123 miles

someone was trying to tell me the other day he got 400 to the tank on a run, it would be nice if that were true.

i must try to average it out next time i do a long motorway journey.

I've done it. Normally get around 300 running around town and maybe 40- 50 of that on the motorway. I generally don't go over 3000rpm. I have got the later 1.8 with the MEMs3, I think that makes quite a difference over the older engines.
