Hi all,

Had a bit of a disaster and need to gauge the groups thoughts. Bit of a story so bear with me. 1995 Discovery 1 300TDI with no previous issues or warnings. Wife was out in in and got to her location saying that about 4-5 miles before she got there the exhaust had blown as the engine was noisy and it was struggling to make power. Kwik fit was close (10 miles) so she took it there and they said nothing wrong with exhaust. She then drove the vehicle approx 10 miles back to her work as I wasn't in the country to help.

Lifted up bonnet and oil filler cap had come off and was stuck at the back of the engine with most of the engine oil covering everything. She then left it as is. Now she has refitted cap, refilled oil (it wasnt on the dipstick) to normal level but engines still vibrating poorly. She mentioned that she didnt get any warning lights until just before she parked up when the oil warning light came on.

I have a video file I can upload, when I find somewhere to link it from..

If you ask your wife when the engine is running to undo but not remove the oil filler cap and see what happens, if the cap pops off then you have excessive crankcase pressure.
Rough location might help as somone local might take a look see for you.
Only warning lights I can think of on a 95 300 for the engine will be oil pressure and alternator light, unless it has edc?

The oil light is less a warning more a info to let you know its too late, as it comes on far too late on a 300 tdi - you may get lucky.

there are additives you can use to help them along to get everything relubrictaed, thinner oil will help too and flush it like you would runnnig in an engine could help reduce further damage and clear out any metal farticals.

Main risk is the piston rings will wear and the oil cap test will show this or bearings will wear/sieze she maybe a bit noisy for next few miles while oil gets back round if that doesnt reduce after a short while may need to check bearings to be safe if caps not doing jumping jacks.
