could be either but if you take the hose off the inlet manifold that will allow enough air in there for it to tick over if it is the lower pipe that is blocked.

try and remove anything that can stop air flow into and out of the engine. but start with the easy stuff first.

The AA guy did that yesterday and tried easy start etc but it still wasnt having any of it

so its had easy start.

my money is on either a timing or compression issue, I am leaning more towards compression.

its still worth trying the other things mentioned in the thread. check for smoke out of the oil filler, bubbles in the cooler header tank. not like bubbles in a bath, bubbles rising up when its being cranked or poss a min or so after give then chance to get through the pipework.

Intercooler hose clear just light oil round edges inside. Exhaust seems ok ive gone along the whole length of it tapping to make sure its hollow and giving it a shake. No cat on it so its a straight through pipe. Going to see if fuel comes through injector unions in a min with the solinoid unplugged and check if smoke is coming out of filler

cool I am interested to know the results, the exhaust being blocked is a long shot but not one to be overlooked. fingers crossed for the solenoid but it didn't do anything with easy start so I don't think its fuel related now. but still worth a shot. don't forget to check for bubbles in the header tank

No fuel came through with the solinoid unplugged. No smoke coming out the oil cap when trying to start it. Movement inside looks normal

did you reconnect the solenoid to look for smoke?

so the engine is getting fuel and air and the exhaust is not blocked so it can breath. the only other things it needs are a suitable environment to combust (timing and compression) the timing appears to be ok as you can see movement under the rocker cover. if the timing belt had gone there would be no movement there is a small chance that the timing belt could have slipped a few teeth and the timing is now out but that's unlikely.

it is sounding very much like compression, could be head gasket or piston rings. I think the next step is a compression test.

Did you watch the rocker shaft ?
not unheard of for them to snap.

how much fuel,, check the 2 pump banjos front should have big hole, rear small, if you leave front loose and pump lift pump fuel with no air should gush out ,

AA bled the system through the injectors yesterday. Any way to do a compression test myself? Or is it a garage job. Im pretty close to giving up and selling it i know they break for decent money but i havent the time to break it

you need a test kit to test it, you may be able to hire one?

I saw a bit of an old trick a while ago where you can get an idea if its the rings or not by puting a few drops of engine oil in each calendar. the theory behind it is if they have not completely gone the oil improves compression by very temporary sealing the gap but you need to be really careful how much oil you put in there! do you youtube search for wet compression test.

have you checked your water header? what dose that look like?

Normal as it hasnt moved anywhere. It needs a waterpump fitting anyway was booked not Sat just gone but Sat before but couldnt get it there as it wouldnt start the Weds before

see if you can hire a compression test kit. I think you can buy one for about £30 but then you have to wait for it to get to you.

it sounds like head gasket to me but I am no professional by any stretch of the imagination.

that should do it. but double check before you buy it

and as the other guys have said, for the sake of taking out the 3 bolts its got to be worth removing the rocker cover to check nothing has snapped under there
