Just bought my Defender 90 and I'm looking to fit alloys instead of the steel wheels. I'm not that keen on adding spacers or grinding things to get some clearance, so looking to see what'll go straight on?

The front hubs look to stick out a fair bit compared to some newer one's I've seen, and this looks the problem.... Drums on the back axle if that makes a difference....

Alloys won't fit straight on drum axles because the hub sticks out where the centre caps go

Have you thought about better looking steel wheels

I like these on my 90 , it's been resprayed now but you get the idea

Thanks for that - yeah, they look really good!

Mine has discs on the front and drums on the back. I'm guessing that's the standard setup, or has mine been butchered at some point?
 
There are plenty of alloys that fit but personally I prefer decent steels, Wellers are a classic wheel and at £29ea brand new they are a bargain:

I personally prefer 15's as well, reason being that the mud shield sits almost perfectley inside the wheel and actually does a great job at keeping mud out, if you fit bigger wheels then the guard is pretty pointless....
 
Here's a question. Will 235's fit on same size rim as a 265? I have an old set of wella style steels with 265's on. Going to refurb a bit and been offered some smart 235's which I want to put on.

They will but more chance of breaking the bead, well, it depends, what width are the wellers? if they are 8" then its fine, if they are 10" then no...

Mine has 235/85/16 tyres on that have loads left on them, so gonna stick with the 16's. What PCD etc should I be looking for when looking at wheels? I've looked at the Weller site but can't see anything that mentions Landys...
 
Plenty of aftermarket alloys fit ealy hubs regardless of type of brake.

I personally have been running ZU's since they came out and they have been fine, prior to that I ran steel modulars.

Fire style fit also. The zu's look top but are quite expensive! Id go the steels are mentioned

Firestyle are ok as they are designed for the earlier axle but you still have the problem with the centre-cap as the hub-cap sticks through. An extended cap is available (see below) but looks awfull in my opinion and without a cap they look incomplete.
At about £150 each ZU's aren't too expensive although they have gone up quite significantly. When I bought mine in 2007 they were only £99 each (I bought a full set of five, saves messing about with a miss-matched spare) but they are very hard wearing and mine still clean up like new which can't be said the the Weller Modular's which were starting to show rust spots by that age.
