Hi, I purchased a 1976 2.5 series 3 last month and i'm having problems with it. i was told it needed a new back axel but I'm not sure. when i'm trying to build up a bit of speed after pulling off i get a regular bump's (feels like getting hit from behind) but when it just plodding along there's no problem. The four wheel drive won't work in either high or low range and i found this out when i got it stuck in a soft patch in the garden. can anybody advise.
Thanks

the 4wd gear lever locks down but the jeep just revs up! none of the wheels move in low range and in high just 1 front wheel spins

Ive just looked underneath and there no sign of any bolts sheared or the axel mis-aligned.

Ive only got the front wheel drive working.

this is my first landy and i don't no where to start to find a solution to this problem

just spent the last 90 min trying to strip the half shaft's and my only feckin 15mm socket broke on a tight nut and the spanner won't shift it,
will have to go a new 1 and try again in the morning.

striped the rear half shafts and found that the driver side has snapped on the drive flange end. have been trying to get the front drivers side (it was the wheel that wouldn't spin when i got stuck) off but can't get the shaft to slide out, should it be difficult to remove or the same as the rear and just slide out with ease?

front wont slide out like rear you would have to strip wheel station down to remove stub axle if you ,jack up front wheel in low box with hand brake on wheel wont turn more than taking up slack if shafts all right

I exposed the shaft on the front wheels and can spin both sides around by hand!! is that right?

If you got a front wheel to spin under drive then the front diff and driveshafts are probably ok - jack the front up, put it into 1st and 4wd, if the propshaft doesn't rotate and spinning one wheel makes the other go in the opposite direction then the front axle is fine. All it'll cost is a rear driveshaft and a couple of gaskets. It's worth replacing both shafts.

where would i be able to get new half shafts for my landy? can't seem to find any place that has them or can get them?
