1964 2A help

Hi guys,

Need some advice, just bought myself my first landie.

Its a 1964 Series 2A diesel. Needs small bit of welding on the bulkhead and the new offside front outrigger needs welding on.

Apart from that there isnt much else.

Only thing is the engine doesnt seem to run, the battery was removed by the previous owner because gypsies moved in near his house :D

Gave it a jump start off a friends Serena and now it turns over really well, seems to be lots of compression and the starter motor appears to be going really well. Just cant get the damn thing to start.

It looks like its had new glow plugs with the parallel wiring upgrade but one thing the chap mentioned was that it hadnt ran for 7 years, so the tank is going to be manky inside?

My friend tried to get round that by filling the fuel filter with fresh diesel but still nothing?

Can anyone suggest anything for me? also can someone tell me what button activates the glow plugs :confused:

ive a S3, turning the key just before it turns over heats the glow plugs , a yellow/orange light comes on too needs about 20 s not sure if s2a the same
cleaning and purging all the diesel lines will help, you can remove the injectors but keep them connected to pipes and check for fine spray coming out of nozzels, the system needs bleeding to rid it of air which would stop it starting,
 
Cheers guys, I had a tinker today, bled the fuel system, took a glow plug out to find out what button actually activates them.

Turns out its the black button above the starter button on the right hand side.

Guy who had it before me had left the fuel return pipe hanging there doing nothing, only realized when pulling the lift pump and diesel squirting out of the fuel line were it should of been.

After about 900000 attempts she finally started :D

blueish smoke and what looked like steam coming out of the long neck oil filler thing(not the one on the rocker cover)

ran abit rough at first as the diesel in the tank is 7years old im told! but after warming up it did settle down. My only worry now is that it appeared to drip some water from underneath the exhaust manifold, possibly a core plug?

Also seems like the wiring is totally messed up as various gauges and lights dont appear to work but its something to keep me busy and that what I was after :D

To my knowledge... 1964 does not = M reg - unless its ex-military and never had a age related plate assigned to it?
 
It is a 1964, first registered in 1973.

I can only presume it was military but to be honest I don't know for sure. DVLA vehicle enquiry states it as follows

"Date of Liability 01 01 2010
Date of First Registration 16 11 1973
Year of Manufacture 1964
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 2286"


dieing to get stuck into it but this bloody rain here is putting a stop to that!

I'd wager that is indeed a 2a, but with a series 3 front end & grille. Look at the bulkhead windscreen mounts and the door hinges.

OP - if it isn't already - you should be able to register this as a Historic Vehicle and get it exempted from road tax.

Quite possibly military, on the front bumper you can see where military bumperettes could have been fitted.

The date of liability 01/01/2010 I think means your SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) statement is out of date. When you buy a vehicle that is off the road (on SORN), the SORN statement is not transferred to you, you have to make your own SORN statement as soon as you get the vehicle. I would urge you to check your SORN status and avoid a disappointing fine.
 
If it's SORN'D i can only assume its not tax excempt - why would you SORN something which is free to be taxed?

In which case, definetly apply for a historically accurate plate and get her tax excempt - she's gonna cost you enough as it is - no point throwing extra money into the empty pit of debt that is the government.

AFAIK it has to be SORNed iff it's off the road, regardless whether it's Historic or not. Tax Exempt is a little bit of a misnoma, it still needs a Tax Disc, it's just free.

I stand by to be corrected.

Yes, you're right, you still need a tax disc it just says 'nil' in the cost / value.

But... if it has tax and sits in bits in your garden, or has tax and is driven around surely makes no difference to the gov? I mean i bet they would love it if you paid to keep your car off-road in bits wouldn't they? so why not have a free tax disc and keep it off road?
 
Yes of course.

If however it's been off the road for a while, it may be out of MOT and not insured ... in which case you can't get a tax disc for it at renewal time whether it's free or not.
 
Yeah bulkhead's coming off its not too bad compared to a lot I've seen but its getting sorted anyway.

To those who say its not a 1964 2A....It is....It may well have been face-lifted at some point.

It is tax free, its taxation class is historic vehicle. It is SORN at the moment as some of the more smart people pointed out, It has to be SORN'd whilst off the road REGARDLESS of taxation class.

It doesnt have an MOT either but passing shouldn't be a problem as tests for vehicle of this age are visual, so aslong as there is no structural rot, working lights and it doesnt fill the test bay in smoke it shouldn't be too much trouble.

And to the guy who was telling me about pre-heating for 20 seconds?

The vehicle was pre heated for 20 seconds, 30, 40, 50 and a minute several times to no avail. The issue was not how long it was to be pre heated but the fact you could resurface a road with the ****e in the tank, 7 year old diesel doesnt run through the filter and pump too well :D

But it ran!.....eventually, pretty sweat aswell once it warmed up. Now im well into my first every strip down and I can see why you guys are so addicted :D
