Hi Guys,

First post be gentle please! Going to look at a Disco2 TD5 this weekend, but it's a bit of a high miler with 150,000 on the clock on a W plate. I've had a search on the forum for things to look for and I am armed with a list to take with me, this forum is a fantastic resource! It has no service book, but is ex authority and I'm assured it has been serviced to requirement.... I'm wondering whether I'm asking for trouble going for something that that amount of miles on and might be better off giving it a miss? Does anyone else have one with this kind of milleage on there's without too many issues?

Looking at prices high miles does seem to affect the value of Td5's.

Depends how the servicing has been done too. Manufacturer's 12k service intervals are sometimes driven more by sales requirements than engineering prudence. 12k miles of cold starts, short journeys on an old engine can be a lot.

On any diesel, turbos can start getting tired at those sort of miles. Also make sure the engine is smooth, with no unpleasant resonances. I have it on good authority that the lucas EUI injectors are good for a several 100k miles.

Also at that mileage look for the main gearbox syncro getting tired, shock absorbers and bushes worn, sloppy steering box etc. Oh one top tip, if the odometer is "flashing" then thats a sign that someone has been trying (unsucessfully) to frig the mileage.

What sort of money is it up for? Without service I'd say the car would have to be cheap, as a broken td5 will be very dear to fix, and your still left with a high miler with no service, thus little chance of recovering your spend.

I'm quite new on disco's too, but have read a lot on disco's the last couple of months.

About high milage disco's:
Ofcourse all depends on what you want to spend.
But there are more then one disco arround with that sort of high milage.
A general idea of the status of the car (and personalality of the previous owner) you might get an idea of how it was maintained.
A well maintained car can do lots and lots of miles. A not wel maintained car with low miles can already be crap.
You should more pay attention to sounds, squeeks, bushes, joints, and ofcourse rust.

It's always a big of a gues....you can have a new car that gives problems from day 1 too....

But high milage only is not a real problem for a disco.

Its not always how high the mileage is thats the issue, its more the way its been accumulated.
150,000 steady motorway miles is better than a lower mileage which has been confined to city driving. Concentrate more on the condition of the car.
 
Buying a second-hand vehicle is always a risk, buying a higher mileage one could be considored a greater risk. Therefore to offset this risk the price MUST be low.

I recently bought a very nice-looking 129,000miler that runs really well, EXCEPT for a transmission whine that I am currently unable to identify.
But I paid £2000 for this car, so at that price I can afford to spend up to a £1000 :)eek:) and still be ok to get my money back.

Price is everything - if you pay too much you are gtt'd to lose money even if it doesn't break down.

Be patient, have a good look around and drive as many as you can, before you jump in.
 
thanks for the welcome guys! Well its up for just over 2k, but might be able to get it slightly lower. It wouldn't be for my primary transport, but then again I don't want to end up spending a bottomless pit of money replacing bits that are knackered. Guess we shall just have to see what it looks like....

Well at least the starting point doesn't seem too bad. If you can manage it, take cash - money really does talk.

Price sounds good at least, at sub 2k you could probably just about break it for spares for that. Saying that tho don't start overlooking big problems just because the car is cheap.

The engine should be very sweet, if its got any significant rough spots then I'd walk away.

Oh one thing check the condition of the ACE pipes (if its got that fitted) these run all over the place and can rust like mad. Does it have air suspension?

In the next 6 months there could be a few cheaper discos coming on the market, once people forget about the snow and start worrying about the possibilty of £1.50 per litre diesel.
 
well it looks like 150,000 was too much for this particular beast, the last 11 years have not been kind to it. Bald tyres, nasty damp smell inside (although I couldn't find any areas of damp) and seriously corroded ACE pipes so didn't even bother to start and drive it. Never mind the search continues....
 
There are lots of them, and there are good exemples....
...so it just taks some time....but it's better to wait and yet a great car then to jump in and regret it later. :D

I'd suggest the back axle Dave... Had to renew the oil a few times and it seemed to get dirty quite quickly. Love the Freely 2 btw.
