Hi,

Is there a parts list or readily available kit available to convert a Salisbury rear axel to discs? I understand a 6mm spacer is required?

I did this conversion a few years ago. there is a very good step by step guide. I cannot remember where I found it but it was referred to as the 'diesel jim' conversion. It gave a parts list (all LR parts) and a step by step of how to carry it out. I don't think it is from this forum but i will see if I can find it again.

I followed these two guides and found it fairly straight forward. Although it is not a cheap conversion.
I used a combination of both guides to work out a parts list. My main problem was tracking down all of the parts second hand. In the end I bought the caliper mounting brackets new, NOS stub axles, and one of the hubs (very annoyingly the pair I bought second hand were not a pair and one was from a later model). I managed to get second hand calipers which I then refurbished myself with new seals and stainless pistons, and managed to re-use the brake discs off the hubs as they were nearly new.

Not had any problems since doing the conversion although I cannot say I noticed much difference either, even when towing a loaded car trailer. The only advantage is they do not need constant adjusting to keep working.

Good point on the adjustment side of thing!

What did you do about the spacer? Is it a custom fab it yourself job?

Yes I made it myself the same as on the Diesel Jim write up. Used the caliper bracket as a template and some 6mm steel plate I managed to liberate from work. Although for the amount you need it would not cost much if you had to buy some offcuts from somewhere selling steel.

you could just use the std salisbury disc axle components,bolted to the drum axle tube there would be no insurance issues then, ive converted a lot that way

Yeah that was what i was thinking. I understand that might be the more expensive option. I just need to find an exploded diagram or detailed parts list.

My local engineering firm manufactured some 6mm spacers, using the caliper bracket as a template. Check out post #74 of my rebuild thread to see the results: Sting Ray's '89 90 - Complete Restoration

I did however have to grind a couple of mm off the external curved radii of the spacers and caliper brackets, in order to clear the inside of the discs, otherwise the hubs would not have sat square on the axle.

That is the diesel jim write up I mentioned earlier, the same one that I used. Those spacers look nice, they may be tidier than making them yourself but they must have cost you more than raiding the scrap bin at work!!

When you're rebuilding an entire vehicle from scratch, one finds one is less-stressed by subcontracting certain tasks ;)
