You won't get on a classic insurance policy at 17, believe me, i've tried.
With a Defender it seems to be affected more by where you live than anything else, if your out in the sticks you probably will get a half decent quote (still probably be in the £2k+) if your in a built up area, Forget about it.
I'm 20, and when I was looking for quotes on my defender I was struggling to get sub £4k with two years no claims. Got it down to £1200 in the end.
Best advice I had was phone up and don't use comparison sites.
Speak On the Phone to your parents insurance company and see if they can do a deal because they're with them.
*Edit* Just for reference, no specialist companies would insure me because I'm under 21 and I'm with elephant now*
