I want to change the chassis on my 1989 110. I see various later second hand chassis for sale for 300tdi, Puma, TD5 etc. I have a good workshop which includes welding equipment.
What is needed to convert to my 110 with a 19j engine.....is it feasible? or do I bite the bullet and get a new one.

Bit of potential problem area. Technically if you swap the chassis for a used one then you should also swap your entire vehicle id into the new chassis. You could theoretically get around this by chopping the stamped vin numbers out and swapping them over but this to potential new buyers (not than 99% bother checking) this could be an issue.
Also consider why someone would sell a used chassis in the first place (cos they are striping a nicked one?)

A lot of work to fit a second hand chassis, unless its a galvanised from new second hand chassis I would not consider it, you would only want to do it once so a nice new galvanised chassis would be my choice. I already have a galvanised chassis and it is a huge weight of your mind knowing its not going to rust (with minimal care).
 
Also, if you're using the same gearbox all you need to do to your current chassis is move the engine mounts to accommodate the 300tdi, alter the radiator mounts slightly and sort an alternative air filter housing. All quite straightforward
 
A 200tdi chassis would fit with no mods but they will be crusty and just as bad as your old one. Pay extra and get the exact same chassis brand new and galvanised. Lovely to work on and no v5 problems.

As far as I am aware no new chassis come with a stamped number certainly not the original. So it could become an issue. I know lots of peeps do it. But if the paperwork is dug into nothing matches:(

I did see where somebody asked for thier number to be stamped in a new chassis but not sure how that went.

I believe most people keep the receipt for the new one and chop the chassis number from the old one as proof

You have a vin plate, no need for a chassis number. Wrong chassis number is a problem, no chassis number is not a problem.
Dvla like a new chassis, problem comes when you use an old one with its number still on it.

"Keep a vehicle’s original registration number
A rebuilt vehicle can keep its original registration number if you can prove you’ve used: the original unmodified chassis or bodyshell (car or light van)a new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original (car or light van)the original unmodified frame (motorbike)a new frame of the same specification as the original (motorbike)" From dvla website.

If you bought a 2nd hand Chassis, then the engine number would not match the chassis number.
If the 2nd hand chassis is from a 300Tdi or TD5, then the axle and gearbox numbers might not match the age of the chassis, so all in all it would look dodgy.
A new Galvanised Chassis unmarked, with a receipt in your name, is completely legit.
I'd say either go new or patch up your existing chassis, to last long enough to save up for a new one. - it makes no sense to strip, blast and repair and rebuild it.

I wonder why so many get nicked then?

We all like a new chassis but they make great shiny “ringers” I could have brought at least 3 identities on the great site over the last couple of months.

The chassis makers need to stamp numbers end of story and provide correct paperwork.

Oh and No chassis number is a problem for us in the “corrupt countries”:D
Maybe the uk needs to step up a bit:)

It just means that it is near impossible to register outside of the UK.
This means we get to keep them for ourselves. ;)

Or somebody else gets to keep it for you in plain site, with a different number on the front and back, enjoy that thought:D

99% of buyers over here do not check the chassis number anyway. I bet most buyers wouldn't know where to find it:rolleyes:
 
I was always led to believe from reading a few chassis swap threads on various forums, that when you’ve fitted a new chassis you can take the paper work to a garage (legit one ) and they can then stamp your chassis number onto the new one and then your supposed to cut it out the old chassis before scrapping it.
 
Thx for this.....think that I will go for a new galvanised one.

Mine is very good from the front bumper to the front ouriggers, both need replacing as do both the rears. It would also need a rear quarter chassis. Repairable....yes but as said on here.....a shiney new one is a good starting point.

My new galv chassis has my original chassis number stamped/etched into it. It was an extra and not classed as “the norm”, but it can be done.
 
You can use a used chassis, over here the mot tester takes the vin from the windshield, I did it on a D2 and never a problem with regards to identity

Legally? and what happens if god forbid one day some person in authority does check the chassis number stamped on it?
