Morning All,

Whilst having a look around the rear of my 1996 110, I noticed my fuel tank looked a little damp.
I've attached three pics of the offending area.
Also, the gunk on the seams does have a distinct diesel smell - MPG has gone up a little bit over the last month or so too.
So. I'm guessing the tank has reached the end of its life - does anyone have any ideas on other things to check before I replace the tank.
When it comes to replacing the tank - any tips?
Where is the best place to get one?

Many Thanks. Happy Easter.

Drain the fuel out of the tank first and be carefull when removin' the pipe from the sender (it's the nut on the fuel tank side that turns and not the one on the pipe). Ye'll also need to remove the tow bar brackets, take note which wires go where on the sender and support the tank with summit before undoin' the four bolts.
Here's some photies on how ah did mine (no write up but ye'll get the idea)...

Quite an easy job;)

Cheers Buster,
Fantastic piccies. Was yours leaking in the same way mine is?
Mine can't be leaking, more seeping out through the seam?
Were you losing MPG?

Thanks again. :)

Looks easy ;)

Nae wurries Martyn;)
Mines was leakin' / seapin' 'round one of the seams like yours but also the bottom was rotten with all the crap gettin' stick between the tank and the guard thing.
Can't say Ah noticed the mpg, but if ah was losin' fuel then ah'd get less to the tank;):D

Mine doesn't have the guard fitted - I presume I can fit one, should I bother?
What year/engine is your wagon buster?
Where did you get your new tank from, did you replace the sender/gaskets etc?
Cheers

Ah was on about that plate that's on the bottom of yer tank, the thing ye can see in yer photies.
Mines is a '91 200tdi 110.
Ah got me 'new' tank from my other '91 200tdi 110.
Ah didn't need to change the sender as it was ok, but did need to replace the part where the top pipe fits onto as it was rotten and also replaced the fuel pipe as ah twisted it tryin' to take it off the sender... was a bit rotten anyways;)

I think you will find that the 'guard thingy' is the cradle that supports the tank and bolts onto the chassis. Comes with all the seals you need and its a reasonable make. Do a google search with the part number and search for the best price. The cradle is often sold seperate so be aware...you wont get the seals thrown in either.

Cheers for advice gents, this Easter holiday thing is a pain as I can't get any parts
Been spraying the rusty nuts and bolts and will get a new one tomorrow.
Let you know how I gets on.

Me again....
Oh the joy of it - my new tank (bearmach one) leaks when full and parked downhill.
It's 6 weeks old :( ARGH...
It appears to be coming from the seam at the front of the tank nearest the front of the vehicle in between the two mounting holes.

The best bit.... my missus threw the invoice away, it's full to the brim and i've got nothing to drain it into.....

Has anyone successfully chemical metaled a fuel tank?

Thanks

Martyn.

How did you pay for the tank If by card then get ya statement out and check it, and contact the supplier to get a refund. You don't need a receipt just proof that you bought it from them.

did yu pay by credit card - if so yu can use yo statement as a receipt. If they play up - contact the credit card company - they will help.
if yu have that much fool - then drive it to suuplier and tell em if they dont replace it, yu will drop a match in their carpark ;).

Thanks for the advice chaps,

Will phone the company later on, Let you know what they come back with.

Hat's off to supplier, top customer service.
Picking up another tank assembly later today - don't even need the old one back.
Warranty replacement.
In the mean time - picked up a brand new genuine one off eBay (retail £513 +VAT) for £75.
Happy days.

FFS.
I am cursed with fuel tanks. Cursed I tells ya.

Ok... fitted genuine tank - made extra sure all seals were correct and sound.
First few fills - only put in 20, then 40 quid.
Pay day yesterday so filled the bugger up.
It's leaking again... a drip every few seconds or so.
Mainly when parked on a slope one way or the other.

Seems to be coming from the side of the tank around the locking ring area.
But not directly from that seal (as far as I can tell) seems to be coming from the tank itself around the seal area.

This is so frustrating - I haven't got any vessel large enough to take the fuel out, so can't drop the tank to have a look. But it's like chasing shadows with leaks - looks like its coming from one place but is probably coming from somwhere else.

What can I do folks - apart from never filling the damn thing up again

Yours hopefully.

Martyn.
