Why is the seller banging on about mileage when its not the original engine? That would put me right orf.
Has nobody else noticed the bulkhead?
Its too shabby to be a 4k motor in my view, its a resto project.

I think saying it is a resto project is a little harsh....it is a tad unkempt in places, but (from the pictures) it looks reasonable.

I admittedly paid £4.5k for our slightly younger 110 CSW, and is a little rough round the edges, but I am very pleased with it.

A vehicle is worth as much as someone is willing to pay and all that..........

£4k for a 1989 era may be a little on the higher side of normal, but it has a younger engine, and if the 60k miles is genuine on the rest of the mechanicals and body, it ain't bad.

Personally, I think £4,650 would be the max for that, sounds like it's been priced to knock down to £4.5k, sounds a bit more reasonable then.
You might find a 110 200tdi with more whistles and bells ( and a radio ) for the same price, but unmodified models have their own allure and prices for them are steadily rising as they are an up-and-coming classic.
Obviously check the chassis and bulkhead for rust, take her for a spin to test gear/t box selection. The only thing I'd be concerned about is the transfer box ratio. If I'm correct ( very good chance I'm not! ) pre-Defender OneTens were fitted with the 1.6:1 t-box, this would limit you to 55-60 ish for motorway cruising, with the engine noise quite loud! Having a 1.4:1 box fitted would make your caravan touring a bit more comfortable!

Hey guys

Going to look at this tomorrow morn
http://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/191777988345

What are initial thoughts?
Does price seem fair?
Anything beyond usual to look out for?
Will be used for holidays towing caravan and my short daily commute.

Is it likely to have PAS?

Can't decide whether to wait for a 300tdi instead as 200tdi becoming scarce.

Any input in any form is appreciated as I can't decide whether to go for it and sacrifice my current mg ztt cdti auto

    Hopefully previous issues were fixed?
I can see very well on bulkhead, looks like filler in the n/s corner you think?

Slightly more concerned now though. May save up for another 6 months and try getting a newer 300tdi

Either filler or corrosion bubbling through the paintwork.

Closer inspection needed....if it is local to you, pop over and take a closer look.....

Remember most of these cars in the 200Tdi and 300Tdi era are approaching and over 20 years old, don't expect mint or corrosion free.....

Ok
So I bought the defender.

Chassis seems very solid and bulkhead is decent with no filler (thanks for magnet tip)

Door tops are good bottoms have a few scabs as usual but not bad, I intend to clean and chequer plate these anyway.

It runs nice with very smooth gearbox, I was quite surprised as it is just as smooth as the r380.

I couldn't tell which transfer box but it did 85 mph on the private road I used all be it the steering was a little vague at that speed
So I suspect maybe has the 1.2 disco one in as it doesn't perform to different to my 300tdi disco did

Its got a disco tranny box, you wouldn't not do it if you put a disco motor in there.
Does it have drum brakes on the rear?
I would be a tad worried about that bulkhead, peel back the door seals right next to the top corners of the bulkhead, I've seen holes big enough to get your hand through in behind the seals and trim. Also have a feel around the door hinges, the bottom hinges don't look to clever from the photos.

Has it had a respray? Can I see white paint around the vent flap seals and windscreen/bulkhead seal?

A lot don't put the t-box in as well, many don't like the higher ratio, not great for bigger tyres or towing. One would suit touring with the caravan though.
All that said, I too doubt it's the original 1.6

Definately 85

It's had paint touch up but not a full spray.
I'll check transfer box and bulkhead tomorrow.
Doors don't seem to have dropped or anything.
I'll really give it a go over tomorrow.
It's by no means perfect but I have seen worse and I think given the silly prices they are fetching it's good for the age and price.

In the work print off from the Land Rover garage is true the 200tdi and box has only done 70k too which is good

Also yes drum brakes, how do I tell if it's a Salisbury axle?

Ps the seller was honest and decent

Ok it's definitely a Salisbury axle as its huge, twice size of front.

It's dark but I think it has had repair panels on the bulkhead corners they are real metal and look to neat to be patch plate.
Passenger side I can see where they have done it slightly due to two round circle things where it's joined. Seems good behind door seals.
Drivers door is good passenger side needs a repair on the post between wing and door.
There a small hole I just poked by bottom hinge and also below top hinge on straight but below curves bit.

Hope this straight forward enough to do anyway.

Drivers side door pillar is solid

Like I said for 27 years old I'm optimistic it's in far better shape than my 94 disco was when I got it

I'll put up some piccies tomorrow

If it were me Id be pricing up a new/second hand bulkhead, but I'm like that anyway and not easily put off by such things. If the rest of it is sound its worth the days work (to me it is), another thing to look at is the sills that run from front then up behind the rear doors, apparently they rust and arnt cheap to replace, if they are good treat them. Body corrosion is another issue on the early ones, not a huge problem but one to be aware of and check for, I think I can see some on the rear tub to cross member mounting points.

ok so some pics:

cant find a sticker anywhere on transfer box, where should i be looking?

- bulkhead still seems solid to me, tiny hole behind drivers side door seal but good behind dash etc.
- solid metal all around, some of the welds needs tidying a bit but overall at least its quite solid
- couple of door are out of align a little causing gaps but most defenders seem like this
- a bit scruffy in places but hey ho i have paid the money now and still i havent seen a 110 CSW go any less on ebay in the time i have been looking
- paperwork would suggest engine and box are now at 70k so thats not bad

think i will stick by the bulkhead as it is pretty solid and im not after a show landy. i want something that will cart my caravan and dogs around with the odd bit of laning, so solid is what i am after.

anyways all feedback is appreciated

more to follow when my stupid computer uploads things properly
