Our 101 is a camper -

101fc_zps3da56de2.jpg

Its got an international engines 2.8 in it, so its replacement cost would be more than id want to loose...

Trying to get insurance on it has, in the past, been troubled.

Basically, if it were a stock vehical, i could get some sort of classic insurance on it.
If it were military, i could get some sort of military policy.
If it were a camper van (but with no military background) i could get a camper company to cover it.

etc.etc.

Sure, adrian flux will cover anything with wheels, but my past experience of them has been poor.

It was insured with Footman James, but, suddenly, after a couple of years with them, they decided it no longer fell into their categories (their requirements changed - the vehicle stayed the same)

Any ideas?

grrr... just called up another place - they do self build camper insurance.

Half way through the quote, the chap queries the reg plate, and it transpires they wont cover anything over 20yrs old.

So that's another restriction that i can add to the list.

Hi,

Sorry that you have had a poor experience of us in the past.

If you wanted to PM me some details I'd be glad to look into this, both to try and rectify any bad feeling and also help with insurance if needs be this year.

Kind regards,
Jordan

is it modified that far from stock? how about making the camper stuff modular so it can be removed back to stock, would that comply?

Jordan,

My issue with your company is that my experience has led me to feel that Adrian Flux was trying to take me for a ride, with regard to your auto renewal quotes.

Trax -

Just got off the phone with Footman James (whom ive had cover with before also)

They will do me cover for £156 but *only* if i take the solar panel off the roof!

Crazy stuff - houses have them on all over the place, and they dont burn down.

But, hey, i dont need it whilst its moving anyhow, and often its nicer to park in the shade, so maybe ill make a mount for it, and set it up on a lead (which they seemed to think would be fine)

mount sounds like the way forward! nice little project to play with too.. and i'm very jealous of that fantastic 101 :)

you should do a few pics of your setup in the members vehicles section

At the moment, the engine is done, and, since the photo was taken, its got a set of XZLs (before craddocks did their rims).

The back is a very basic conversion (but that photo was taken on a campsite in france, so livable) but im very tempted to do that 18" extension on the back that a number of people have done, and put a side door in - that will probably complicate insurance even more though!

Its parked up 250 miles away at the moment, but the plan is to get it insured etc. and move it here (devon) for summer.

Hi,

Apologies in that case, we will always change a policy to a non auto-renewal policy if requested. If you do decide this interests you please just give me a shout.

Regards,
Jordan

Was it originally a military vehicle?
If it was can't see why you wouldn't get mil vehicle insurance just because it's not green.

They get upset that its got a sink and stuff in it. Half the time (in fact way more than half) i think they could insure it, but are just trying to cover their backs / not worth the bother.

Sure, i could take it out, but i trust insurance companies so little that i would not want to give them any excuse not to make good on any policy.

The options are -

motorhome policy (they get upset about the value being kept on a public road)

mil policy - they get upset about the motorhome stuff

classic policy - they dont seem so bothered, but didnt like the solar panels!

...i think my best option so far is probably the £156 from footman james, and take the panels off - which is a shame, but you can buy a good number of days hookup for the distance between that and a motor home policy

I have sent a pm. You will have my details on file from when i last insured with you. I kind of know you will give a reasonable quote this time (as im a new customer) but i am dubious as to what will happen at renewal time, if i do go with you.

Will wait and see, i guess (depending on what the quote is this time)

The common theme with AF though is that they will likely stiff you by inaction or bureaucracy when you need to claim. Personally I'm like a stuck record - Go NFU! :D

Last time i was with them, i had it on an agreed value (which they, IIRC, charge you an admin fee for, to even look at the photos!)

I figure im unlikely to make a claim for a few hundred quid, given that that alone would screw any future premium by more than that, so im insuring more for the 3rd party (in which case its someone else's issue) or for the total loss (in which case its all in black and white anyhow)

...so im not as bothered by that end of things.

Not long off the phone with AF and I am very happy with the customer service, but I am a first time user. I have found that all insurance companies charge way over the odds for renewal, but if you phone them they are very accommodating.
