Now has power steering! Photos later.

Got all the stuff off a breaker, all went in easy over the course of 2 leisurely mornings. About 5 hours work in total.

Problems encountered along the way:

- Needed to retap a thread in the mount
- HP hose had a pinhole leak in it, on a straight part - temp fix with some rubber pipe slid over the top with hylomar inside and a jubilee clip directly over the hole - will get a new pipe at some point (payday lol)
- bango bolt on the pump was leaking due to a duff o ring, luckily I had one of the right size in my o ring tin

Off for a test drive now!!

Nice, I'll enjoy your critical review and photos! I have a pump and the pipes, but I don't have the box. It would be a nice to have for me, but my biggest problem is the huge turning circle. It's like a barge.

Isn't yours a 90?

I dunno if the turnjng circle will be different between manual and PAS. I seem to have about a 1/3rd or maybe half a turn less lock to lock. Maybe the ratios are different and you get the same movement for less turns??

Dunno. If it's ****e I will take it off and put my manual box back in.

I fitted it as I have a bad shoulder so it should help with that, also I have to do a 74747 point turn to back into my garage lol

Right here go, fitted PAS from a breaker 2.5TD over 2 leisurely mornings, around 5 hours work in total.

First fitted the reservoir bottle

then the rare mount for the 2.5na engine and the triple pulley

Swapped the old manual box (top) for the new PAS box (bottom)

To my relief the chassis under the old box was perfect

Then fitted the pump itself

ran the hydraulic lines and filled and bled the system and fitted a new belt.

I did the same conversion to a 1973 Jeep CJ 5.
Big difference, soooooo much nicer especially with the bigger tyres.

Woah the difference is immense. I keep over correcting at roundabouts lol

My temp fix for the leaking pipe has half worked. It still leaks but is t spraying out as bad - new pipe, either from LR or pirtek to make one up.

Ed

Looking good, and i bet it feels good to have all the right parts for it to fit with little fuss.

Thats an expensive bit of pipe!

Yeah it is, it a banjo on one end, then a length of high pressure hose crimped into a really long complicatey bent piece of steel pipe with a flange fitting at the end.

Don't seem the be able to get it aftermarket. :(

Would fitting the triple pulley and damper unit make the engine feel smoother when accelerating?

The one I put on felt a bit heavier than the twin one I took off.

Would this make a difference?

Ed

Changed out the leaky pas pipe, new dowty washers on the pump and O rings everywhere else and no leaks :) will take it for a long test drive tomorrow :)

finally finished fitting steering stuff, last thing was the steering guard bar thingy

Also remounted my CB and added in a second map reading light as i have zero internal illumination in the cab.

For the Cb i ran wires in conduit straight up from the battery into the light blue junction box (i had it spare) with a 12v accessory on the end, CB plugs into this with a lighter socket plug, straight off battery is deliberate so that the light and the CB works with the engine off, the CB isnt in there all the time

That looks a nice set-up. Does the whole metal bracket just hook over the bulkhead? I haven't had a proper go at greenlaning yet but I imagine having one of these is handy.

nah it bolts to the top then the vertical section, will take a pic for you.

I just reused the rifle mount brackets

Not really unless the one you pulled off was knackered. A harmonic damper reduces torsional vibration from the crank shaft, this resonance will rear itself at a perticular rpm but if it was bad enough to cause you grief while accelerating I doubt your crank shaft would have lasted.
Saying that I dont think the none PS / AC pulley has a harmonic damper , does it?

No, mine doesn't it's just 2 pulleys on a central metal lump if you see what I mean, the new one was 3 pulleys and a large metal thing in the back that looks similar to the old pulley but bigger and heavier.

Normanlaw - steering thing was a doddle to fit, took about 20mins for the bar and about 4 hours to fit an entire pas setup with breaks for lunch and stuff
