£520 for a new clutch !

Hi All

Phoned the dealer today regarding a price for a new clutch (if i need one, not yet thank god) for my Disco TDI 300 (96)

He qouted me £520 with VAT, does that seem expensive, i asked you guys last week and was told around £350 which would be nice.

Can anyone recommend a garage in my local area of Bath / Bristol i dont mind traveling a bit to get a fair price.

I know im panicking a bit as thers no slipping at all at present.

Also can anyone give a few ideas as to the most common problems to look for, shes been serviced last month and cam belt changed but i though if i attended to the most common faults in advance instead of waiting until they fail.

Ive read about EGR valve probs and have orded the kit from ebay so thats one job gonna be sorted.

If you guys can recoomend anyhing else ill get it all sorted now before the winter sets in

my local landy indy charges £200 +VAT(parts included) for fitting a full clutch, try ringing round a bit more for a better price. If it is not showing any signs of slipping do not worry about it, mine has now done 154K and I would say half of that has been towing my car trailer behind it, and is still on the original (in fact virtually nothing has been changed in all that mileage).

Why worry about the clutch if it's working fine?
You will almost always get plenty of warning of the clutch wearing out.
Disco clutches are pretty tough things anyway.

One thing I would suggest is to keep a close look out for the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder pot. In fact, I would go so far as to suggest you carry a 250 ml bottle of brake fluid all the time. The fluid going down will disable the clutch.

Topping up is fast cheap and easy.

Yeah that is a bit expensive, think the guy I usually use (small local garage) charged me 240 incl parts for a full clutch on my old jeep, takes much lomger to fit than a disco.

edit : if your doing the EGR removal, fitting a blanking plate etc : make sure your gentle with the two allen key bolts, two people I know have snapped them, pain in the ass to sort out. lots of wd40 and leave it to soak

Can't recommend Steve Hill high enough. Used to be senior LR main dealer mechanic, and he's excellent, especially if you have one of those awkward problem. Bit more expensive than a regular independent because he's a specialist, but makes up for it in knowing how to sort it out so spends less time messing about.

Be careful! I was Quoted £350 two weeks ago td5 Disco 99
(see my previous threads). The favorite is the dual mass fly wheel has worn as well, another £270 the final bill came to £698.
If you need to change your clutch and it doesn't seem like go with mmaddock's guy you can't beat good recommendation. I should have it would still have been cheaper.
