My 88' Project

Hey guys
Here are some pics of the 88", I just bought for my wife.
It needs a fair bit of work underneith, usual welding **** I guess. Once I've done that I'm going to sand blast the chassis, and replace all the steering components & detail it all up. The plan is for power steering & disc brakes too.
It also needs a new transfer box (I think), as it makes a terible noise in 1st, 2nd & 3rd, and won't select 2 wheel drive.

how are you planing to get the power steering fitted ?

and if you can't select 2WD, you shouldn't be driving it on the road.

does it have a valid MOT ?

looking at the state of the dumbirons i suspect the chassis will need replacing or a considerable amount of welding done on it

It does have an MOT, but once I got it home & had a good look over it, I realised it must have been a dodgey one.

Only realised when we got home that it won't go into 2 wheel drive, didn't know you shouldn't drive it on the road like that :doh:

Yep, the dumbirons don't look pretty, but should be ok once I've tackled them with the welder.

Detail it - fresh paint underneith & all new nuts & bolts etc.

Not sure about the power steering yet, see other thread.

think you'll be doing a bit more than painting the underneath and changing the nuts and bolts (why do that anyway?)

one of the series landys i've got at the momment looked simillar to yours before i thought (one sunday morning) that i'd change the broken washer jet

Nice work. Most of it's solid, it does need a bit of welding, but I'm not planning on taking the body apart.

I kow what you mean though, about planning on fixing one thing & ending up taking it all apart - that's how my blue Beetle started, in the end it took me a year & a half & over 20k

nah i've gorra short attention span, plus i've hada lorra paid landy work to do, and it's been cold out, and me trayback disco arrived and needed some fettling, and me V8 SD1 engine fer me series needed finishing, and i had to go get married etc etc

you knows how it is ADHD isnt all it's cracked up to be

but then it'll be summer soon

I'm pretty sure I can repair the chassis without replacing it.

the beetle....originally KDF wagon or strength through joy car went into production before the start of the second world war.Do a google search for hitler kdf wagon and you'll find him being driven around in the back of it as he could not drive.
The pre war KDF wagon then became the kubelwagon ( jeep 4x4 variant ) also an amphibious version ( swimmwagen ).The british as you quite rightly said took charge of production in wolfsberg after the war.

The war ended in '45, production of the Beetle (as we know it) started in '46.
