I want a Freelander!!

Just joined the forum tonight. :D Am thinking about a 1999/2000 FreeLander Diesel, reading some of the posts tonight, begining to think i maybe i maybe making a booboo! Everyone seems to be slagging them off! I won't be driving through rivers or going up mountains, just on the road. Come on guy's had my heart set on one, can someone restore my faith. Cheers :)
 
why do you want a freelander???

if it's cos you like the look of them, then that's why everyone takes the **** out of them

if it's cos you like the way they drive then that's why everyone takes the **** out of you...

if it's cos you want to tow, buy a mondeo, the towing ability is comparable... or buy a disco and tow properly..

at the end of the day what you buy is up to you... for me if I'm gonna buy a 4*4 I'll buy what I consider to be a proper one... hence my disco.. if I'm gonna buy a car I'll buy a proper one hence my mondeo... the idea of buying something that's a bit of both but not really either is alien to me...but it's your call..

Yep. Like the look of them, plus want something abit higher up to sit in ( Back Back ) Thought the Diesel was'nt so bad? Just want something that's relativley reliable.
 
the look of them is a matter of taste

high up.. you could go for an mpv or a real landrover but probably not worth sacrificing mpg and they really don't look good in anyones eyes...

relatively reliable... I can tell you only joined here tonight...

if you aint gonna use it like a 4*4 have you looked at the jap suv's... honda's are reliable and economical, toyotas are very reliable but expensive.. and imho they all look better than a gaylander...

what a cock end tbh!
the l-series, i.e earlier diesels although not lightning quick, aare indestructable, AND easy and cheap to maintain, all the probs seem to come from the TD4's! looks of any car are a matter of taste, HENCE why i think your a prick for buying a mondeo! instead of just slating the freelander, try giving some constructive advice and opinion!

True the L-series does have a good reputation.
False, the problems don't come from the Td4.

The problems come from the petrol models, the Td4 has some areas e.g. MAF sensor, Camshaft position sensor, Crankcase breather assembly all of which are easily sorted. Also the IRD was updated for the Td4 models & is less prone to failure. Td4s also have a timing chain instead of belt.

have a look through the problem threads, and i would say that 95% of DIESEL problems are with the TD4! plus the l-series will run 100% bio no worries! also, took me 40mins to change the belt, and under £20 so not really anything to put it down for!

L series engines are bulletproof, just make sure you get one with a post 2001 IRD. Good for veg oil aswell. Had a few problems with mine but nothing major - aprt from the IRD which I replaced with a post 2001 model. If your going to buy one I'd say get the Xedi (L series).

You are considering a nearly ten years old, relatively complicated 4x4. Such a vehicle will be more expensive to fix when it goes wrong than a simple little mini. Which type of vehicle do you want to be in?

Nuffink wrong wiff doozle gaylanders l series suffered from rear ratio probs [so more likely to have vcu probs but rock solid injun but albiet er bit slow td4 had a few problems [most bin sorted by the good folk on this ear forum] fantastic 4x4 best in its class. . . .very good orft road good econermy fantastic on motorways, rolls a bit on corners [so do all 4x4's ] dont take any notice of the slaggers [there Mums ran orft wiff a gaylander driver] :D :D :D :D :p

I'm not slagging off gaylanders as such.. maybe they are best in their class after all they invented a class practically..but I presonally think the japs do softroaders better... and cheaper...

my point is as a personal opinion (and not expected to be shared by others but none the less I reserve the right to express it) the entire softroader class is a bit pointless...
 
Cheers guy's feel abit better now, so the one to go with is the xedi model? i will be running it on Homemade Bio diesel on a Ratio of 80/90 % Bio Diesel, it's got the Bosch Fuel pump so it will be o.k. Thanks
 
Every car/vehicle has its vices, for every bad post here is there is probably 10 happy owners elsewhere who dont even use the forums, fact is people tend to turn to the forums for any vehicle when they strike problems in search of answers whether large or small :)

We love ours atm - and its had a couple of small typical freelander problems, as already said the Dervs are definately the best option....IMHO also.
