Down on power

I have a mapped 10p TD5 that should be producing approximately 190hp but the rolling road says 160hp. Compression is good, all sensors are functioning correctly, turbo and actuator are working fine, engine starts and runs perfectly and there is not enough black smoke to worry about. I just can’t figure out where I’m losing this power. I even removed the viscous fan and the snorkel but that made little difference. Does anyone have any suggestions?

How do you know you're down on power? Because it's noticable, or because a Rolling Road told you?
If a RR told you it was 190, did the exact same RR tell you it's now 160? You can get VASTLY different results from RR to RR.

should be producing approximately 190hp

Has this been verified? In a similar vane to the above, do you know you actually had 190, or have you just installed a map that claims to give you 190?
From the sounds of things you are not down on or losing power, you have just not gained the power you were expecting which is very different.

Yes I hear what you’re all saying and hindsight is wonderful. The truck was a mess before it was mapped and yes, i should have done a before and after. However, there were various reasons why I didn’t and that’s causing me problems now.

The company I used is very well known and respected within the Landy fraternity; the name will be familiar to a lot of people on here and I have no problem with their service at all. I do understand that results will definitely vary from vehicle to vehicle and I know it is never a sure thing as to what you get when remapping. Other vehicles of similar mileage and age (unless there’s a problem) produce between 180-200hp. I’ve seen it plenty of times.

So, has anyone got any ideas as to why there might be a 30(ish) hp difference between like for like engines using the same RR and mapping software? If it were 10hp I wouldn’t mind but it seems too big a difference to be ignored.

They said it’s most likely injectors. I can see how it could easily be as they are an unknown quantity. I’m just trying to rule out other obvious possibilities before getting on that particular train!

If they are saying it is injectors start with throwing a couple of bottles of redex or similar into the tank and see if that improves anything. I know it is not the same but I do this regularly on my 200tdi, and it makes a difference if I have not done it for a while.

You say it was a mess before it was mapped, what do you mean by this, did you have engine issues before? Surely a reputable tuning company would advise you to have a well sorted and fully serviced engine before trying to increase power and remap.

I have a couple of bottles ready to pour in. Just waiting for the fuel to run low.

I basically bought a box of bits in the shape of a Defender. At the time I had no idea how pointless Britpart was and when it was plugged in just about every sensor gave crap readings and was subsequently replaced with genuine. The throttle pedal was programmed wrong and the ECU was from a D2. It ran but clearly not properly.

Before it went on the RR obviously everything needed to talk to the ECU correctly or there was no point. The plan was to do a standard reset (or whatever it’s called) and work from there. But due to time factors it was decided to just do the remap and then put it on the RR. After the remap it was obviously still massively underpowered and long story short it needed a replacement engine. The new engine is far better than runs sweet as a nut! So, back to the RR for the results of the remap and it’s still very low.

Everything about the thing is spot on but it just won’t show more than 160hp. I’ve seen the same treatment given to plenty of trucks and they all land around 185-195.

Let’s see how this injector cleaner works. Although I’m not holding my breath.

Alive tuning put out a video on YouTube this week with the same thing 160 ish but an expected 190 ish, they put it down to injectors too but he did a fair bit of fault finding on the vid you could probably do yourself, just to rule some stuff out before you spent the money on a set of injectors

Is that claimed bhp at the flywheel, or at the wheels? A difference of around 16% (which is what yours amounts to) between the two wouldn't be unusual.

It was Alive that did it. Perhaps it was my truck? I’ll go and check 🤣

No it is hp at the flywheel. Bhp would be at the wheels I believe. There was some discussion about gear ratios and wheel diameters but i’d tuned out a bit by then.
