Hi and happy new year to you all,

The other week I had one of my front wheel bearings replaced due to a strange grating noise coming from the front end.

Now, what has happened seems to be two-fold.

In the first place the noise is still there and by what a mate of mine has told me it looks like something he called the "shimms" in the front diff might have gone and need replacing.

The second part of the problem is now I have no ABS nor Traction Control (and yes, the control panel lights say likewise). This we guess is due to the guys in the garage having the beast on the lift and putting it into gear to get the wheels spinning to find out where the noise was coming from in the first place.

Does anybody out there know how to restore the ABS/Traction Control or is it a case of having to go to the local Landy dealers (the thieving so & so's over here in Portugal) to get the system re-set?

Back to the noise problem. Are the shimms the likely culprit and if so are they easy to get a hold of and fit?

Hope someone can help.

All the best,

Phil

What does the noise sound like? has it changed since you have had work done on it?

The ABS light is more than likely caused by the sensor at the hub you had work done on, have a look to see if it's still connected first.

The noise is something like a high pitched metalic grinding/rubbing. Back in august last year I had a complete oil change (motor, gear box, transfer box and both front and back diffs), some time after that I found that both the diffs had a leak (the front one being the worst) so I went back to the local garage I use and we re-sealed them which did the job.

Now, the funny thing is that when the machanic re-moved the lower bolt on the front diff to drain off the oil inside we noticed quit a lot of fine metal shavings stuck to the end of the bolt (apparantly the bolt is magnetic for this sort of thing) which when we did the first oil change weren't there, but when he re-moved the crown housing he couldn't see any wearing on anything in side.

What is a bit anoying is that is seems that we didn't need to changed the front wheel bearing in the first place and the noise is still the same (just getting slowly worst).

I'll get them to check the ABS sensor, it isn't the first time I get the warning along with no ABS/TC. Sometimes after "playing" about on muddy dirt tracks I used to get the same thing, but after a few meters on the road it would clear up. Saying that, when the guy way replacing the bearing he had to remove a skirting which went around the inside of the wheel mount. This skirting did have a hole in it which the guy said was where the ABS sensor "looked" through. So it could be a case of him not quit putting the skirting back in the right position.

If it isn't that does it mean having to go to the darn Landy dealers?

All the best and thanks for the help so far,

Phil

Just an up-date on the sound part of my problem. At first I thought it was one of the break-pads getting worn down too much and in need of swapping. That's the sort of sound I mean.

All the best,

Phil

No ideas anyone?:(

It's hard to tell without hearing it, as it's seems to be fairly high pitched squeeling I'd be inclined to look at the brakes first. Can you get the front wheels off the ground and undo one end of the front prop, this will let you spin the wheels and listen a bit closer.

As I said in the begining, thought it was the breaks, but after checking them all we knew it wasn't.

When we had it on the lift and had it going in 4th at a fare rate with the wheels off the ground we all came to the same conclusion, the noise is coming from the diff.

Cheers,

Phil

Right, I'd change the diff then, it's a piece of cake to do and you can find a cheap replacement one on Fleabay easy enough.

The bearings are at the end of the axle so it can't be them causing the noise if you say the noise is coming from the diff (in the centre of the axle) the diff has shims for the correct pinion to crownwheel set-up and unless you know what you are doing you will have great dificulty rebuilding a diff yourself, the fastest, cheapist alternative is to swap it out with a known good one, and as I said it won't take too long to do, and if you still have noise afterwards, it's one less thing to worry about:D
