I remember seeing this road on a map as a teenager thinking "ooh nice straight - good for a bit of speed"

https://maps.google.co.uk/?ll=53.890658,-2.516727&spn=0.012405,0.033023&t=h&z=16
The road in question is the one at the bottom of the "rectangle" - goes to the south east corner then up to the north east corner.
However, it's a farm track, only good for a rally car (not a roadgoing XR2
) or a 4x4. Anyway, upon looking at Lancs County's MARIO map it shows it as unadopted. It's not gated, nor can I recall ever seeing any gates on it.
Is an unadopted road a private road - you need permission from the landowner? Or does it depend on other things?
Thanks,
Diff.
