Driving unadopted roads?

I remember seeing this road on a map as a teenager thinking "ooh nice straight - good for a bit of speed"

The road in question is the one at the bottom of the "rectangle" - goes to the south east corner then up to the north east corner.

However, it's a farm track, only good for a rally car (not a roadgoing XR2 ) or a 4x4. Anyway, upon looking at Lancs County's MARIO map it shows it as unadopted. It's not gated, nor can I recall ever seeing any gates on it.

Is an unadopted road a private road - you need permission from the landowner? Or does it depend on other things?

Thats an interesting one, it continues south across a deep ford over the river according to trailwise.

Doesn't seem anyone has tried it though and it says its signposted a footpath at the southern end.

yes you can drive on it.

an unadopted road is just that, ie not maintained by the council, it is the responsibility of the people who own land bordering the road to maintain it.

It is a public right of way.

I used to live on one, and we wernt allowed to gate it off to stop rat runners coming along behind our houses (thing long terrace, main road along the front, dirt track along the back (unadopted road))

It looks Roman from here. It continues NE in places and as field boundarys to just outside Newton in Bowland and SW into forty acre lane.
It doesn't look like an enclosure act road with it crossing the river Hodder twice and the fact that where the road doesn't show as a road, its route is visible as field boundaries.
