If it's auto - then yes it's a common problem. Mine had the same problem, unfortunately it's often a box out job - I had a recon box fitted :(:(:(

Only car I ever made money on was my first Landy - Series 3 V8 - bought for £1500 & sold 1 year later for £2400! Never since and probably never will again - but generally once they get to this age, they haven't got far to fall, compared to 'normal' family cars, which depreciate much quicker...

Had a 300Tdi manual, used to average 32mpg, then changed to a Td5 auto - dropped to 26mpg. DIII is a big heavy car (even compared to DI / DII), so I wouldn't have thought you'd get better than 30

I've almost been at the stage of calling out green flag when my TD5 auto wouldn't start - luckily realised in time that it won't start if the box is in 'D'!! Boy would that have been embarrassing
