I know this is a daft question but what part of the wheel do you hit with the hammer and how hard do you hit it? Worried about breaking it.

I have the same issue with mine. It's not a huge problem but causes my ordered mind to twitch a bit. I would prefer to try James's second option but I am damned if I can get my steering wheel to budge. Tried with my hands, knees, soaked with WD40 but it's locked on solid. Any bright ideas ?

Thanks for your responses. Finally got it sorted today by removing the wheel arch spat and used a bendy socket extension to tighten the hose clip. Got there in the end, need to be more patient

Thanks John Yes had a closer look at this after you replied and it was a simple fix. The lock on the inside is attached to the handle mechanism by two small bolts, they had loosened and just needed to move it back into position and retightened

On OP photo the original indicator lenses aren't the same, ones orange the other clear. Isn't that an MOT failure as well?

Mines a pre defender with a 200tdi conversion too. I had exactly the same issue ie reading in the red but engine not overheating. I replaced the sender but made no difference and turned out to be the guage. Once replaced everything hunky dory again.
