Looking at the two sheared ends of the bolt show that the bolt has largely been cracked through for ages. Got the seals out today. They were pretty well glued in with sealant. Took abuse with a claw hammer but I won. Waiting for a socket to get the diff flange off.

Is it worth trying an Easy Out or am I more likely to end up with a snapped, hardened steel, nightmare?

From what I can tell there hasn't been an undershield on there since I was a boy :) Probably explains how the filter got so welded on in the first place.
