No Reverse Gear - TD4 Auto

Unfortunately the car is currently with a 'specialist' and the gearbox is already out so I can't test anything. I'm fairly sure the local garage messed with the wrong bolt, given that I drove it 300 yards home and parked up (when reverse was presumably still working), then drove 20 miles to...

No Reverse Gear - TD4 Auto

So would this be connected to the existing transmission problem (whine that changes pitch with revs, only happens in gear) or just incredibly bad luck having a muppet mechanic break the gearbox while not finding what was actually wrong with it to begin with?!? :boom:

No Reverse Gear - TD4 Auto

So... apparently the "bands" have gone in the gearbox. Is this the selector thing that goes when you try and take the wrong bolt off for oil inspection? Do they sometimes go for other reasons? What sort of price am I looking at for taking gearbox out, fixing it and reinstalling? Thanks

No Reverse Gear - TD4 Auto

Thanks all for the info. One odd thing - the whining/whirring/annoying transmission noise no longer occurs when freewheeling in gear (foot off the throttle), whereas it did before reverse gear got stolen. Still there when the throttle's down though. Taking it to an indie LR garage on Weds...

No Reverse Gear - TD4 Auto

That did cross my mind. How would he have stolen it while I was driving though, unless he was clinging on to the bottom of the car like Robert De Niro in Cape Fear?

No Reverse Gear - TD4 Auto

Perhaps he did, not sure. Wouldn't that cause reverse to stop working immediately?

No Reverse Gear - TD4 Auto

Hi, Been having issues with what turns out to be the transmission: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/whirring-whining-noise-under-bonnet-250413.html Drove into work today and discovered Reverse has vanished. Was ok when I left home. So... does this still sound like IRD/transfer box...

    Whirring/whining noise under bonnet

With work and kids I can't get down to Worcester to swap units over. It's gonna have to be a local job - will speak to the garage about getting a recon unit in. Anyone want to buy a low mileage mk1? It's getting sold before or after the work's done...

    Whirring/whining noise under bonnet

So.... garage reckons it's the transfer box. Maybe £1200 job. I feel like a proper Freelander owner now

    Whirring/whining noise under bonnet

Stalling is probably a red herring, engine just died first thing a couple of times in the morning. Was fine after going forward 10 yards then reversing.

    Whirring/whining noise under bonnet

So do I! It has stalled a couple of times recently when I try and reverse out of parking space first thing in the morning - never done this before - can't see a connection but you never know.

    Whirring/whining noise under bonnet

Yes, it changes with engine speed. The pitch gets higher as whatever is causing it seems to speed up too. Seems to get louder with engine braking but the pitch slows down. Haven't noticed any excess smoke. It's odd that nothing happens when I rev away in neutral if the vehicle's not moving...

    Whirring/whining noise under bonnet

Hi, hoping for a bit of advice. I've had my mk1 TD4 auto a few months, done a few thousand miles in it to bring it up to about 66k. Had the crankshaft pulley replaced in Nov but other than that it's been mostly ok. Last week driving up the M1 I noticed a new sound coming from somewhere up...

    1952 Series 1 - what's it worth?

It's got to be worth at least a full one! Will see if he's got any pics. Cheers

    1952 Series 1 - what's it worth?

Hi, My dad's thinking of selling his restored 1952 Series One. He used it a lot back in the early 80's, trialling and green laning and so on (which was great fun for me as a little kid!), then it got sold when he moved abroad. He bought it back about 5 years ago and had it restored, since then...

Boot size 3 door vs 5 door

It does indeed! Yep, it's an OEM one. Thanks for the info. The boot carpet is immaculate, might as well try and keep it that way. Having just traipsed half an allotment of mud round the pedals I think I'll be after some rubber mats too (or maybe just pound shop doormats ;))

Boot size 3 door vs 5 door

Thanks for that, it was a rigid plastic one from a 3 door so looks like it won't fit my 5 door. Saved me a wasted trip!

Boot size 3 door vs 5 door

Hi, a daft question for my first post - is the boot floor the same size in a 5 door and a 3 door mk1 Freelander? I'm looking at a 2nd hand boot liner and I don't want to get it if it doesn't fit... Thanks! :)
