My Freelander came with a 6 C.D. changer under the front passenger seat, so it must be possible to retro fit one. The cables might even be there already.

Sump guard is easy to remove, there are lots of pics. and threads on it. I still prefer the 'Spareness it with a finder' method though. :D

Does the fuel tank have a seperate vent or is it through the fuel cap ? Years ago escorts (and other cars) used to have your symptoms because the vent in the fuel cap blocked and caused a vacuum in the tank. (You could hear a sucking noise as you removed the cap). Its not likely to be your...

See if a high pressure air line will blast the bits out.

Download RAVE and check which fuse powers these lights and check the fuse and the wiring to and from it.

Yep, all the solenoids and the two connectors. There not fully submerged in oil as the pan you take off is up the front of the box, but they are certainly splashed in oil and were covered in it when I removed them.

Search jatco gearbox problems, there are a few threads about them on the go, at the moment. Rovers and volkswagons use them and there is alot of info on their forums.

Are the wheel spacers compressing, causing the nuts to come loose ?

All freelanders heat up quickly, its the way the cooling system is designed. Just keep a close eye on the level in the expansion tank.

The line pressure is a pig because it pushes down into the valve body. The others push back into it so are or seem easier. The bolts are very long so you have to jiggle the oil cooler about to get them past.

The plenum chamber is screwed and glued, it doesnt come apart very easily. I replaced mine with a Rover 75 unit after getting the software updated. Then chiselled, hammered, broke mine open and pined the valves shut with wire. If it goes again this one will go back in.
