What else is in YOUR garage???

Mercedes C class estate auto that’s fairly new and the wife drives. Audi A4 estate 2.0 tdi (240k miles; we’ve had it from new and it’s still on its original clutch, starter and alternator. The heated seats packed up some time ago and I’ve just put a new rear wiper motor on it. It’s picked up a...

What paint for steering and suspension?

I posted this over a year ago and I’m bumping it back up the forum because I’m amazed I’ve had no replies. If anyone’s got any experience of painting LR suspension parts can you share some tips please?

    LT230 backlash when diff locked

Thank you. I still live in hope of finding an old defunct R380 mainshaft kicking around someone’s workshop.

    Old R380 mainshaft kicking around?

Has anyone in the area ever rebuilt an R380 gearbox? I need an old mainshaft. So long as it’s got some splines left on it, it will do for what I want.

    LT230 backlash when diff locked

Ideally I need to try and source a knackered R380 mainshaft that I can cut down to make an equivalent to LRT-41-005. (It’s the tool that goes into the main shaft of the LT230 when you’re using a torque meter to check the preload of the bearings in the layshaft as you collapse the spacer inside...

    LT230 backlash when diff locked

Ok. Fingers crossed for when I strip it down. It certainly all feels smooth and no obvious problems I can feel or see with covers off. I’ve ordered bearings and gaskets and shims so hopefully it’s just a straightforward rebuild. Case is on its way to being clean and shiny on the outside. I’m...

    LT230 backlash when diff locked

Thank you. I guess I’ll examine the various splines and then the teeth etc on the locking collar carefully when I’ve got it all stripped down.

    LT230 backlash when diff locked

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I've bought a Disco LT230 to fit to my Defender. I'm going to rebuild it, but when checking things over before I do the complete strip down I notice that there's a 1/8 turn or more play between front and rear drive flanges when the diff is locked. I...

    TD5 strange starting behaviour.

Battery is fine. Cranks rapidly and starts immediately but then the engine dies. Vehicle was bought as a private sale a month ago. The huge list of major defects my local Landrover specialist found against a “no advisories’ perfect MOT” (yes I know there are no guarantees with an MOT etc) is...

    TD5 strange starting behaviour.

My TD5 started instantly when I first bought her. She’s developed a habit of starting on first turn of the key but dying immediately. It’s starting to take several attempts to get her going. Once she’s running all seems fine and I’ve not noticed any loss of power etc. Any ideas where to look first?

What paint for steering and suspension?

As I start do odd jobs on the suspension of my Defender (TD5 2002) I will clean off and paint any bits I remove. Any suggestions for paint? What colour would they have been originally? Any particular tips? If this should be in Defender forum then please move it.

    Aluminium Corrosion Treatment

It's the trade name for Barium Chromate paste. It's a gloopy thick yellow grease like substance that forms a barrier between the metal surfaces. It dries after a while. For more details see http://www.llewellyn-ryland.co.uk/downloads/duralac.pdf I've no connection with the manufacturer or...

    Aluminium Corrosion Treatment

I work in the marine industry some of the time. When aluminium or alloy fittings are bedded together in the salty environment (electrolysis can be rampant!) the industry standard compound is Duralac. https://www.force4.co.uk/duralac-anti-corrosive-jointing-compound.html#.WdWdFkHTX7o Other...

    Fuel Gauge Problem

I've just been quoted £600 to fix the problem so it looks as though it will be me on my back with the Defender on ramps!

    Fuel Gauge Problem

There's some heavy rubber fitted under the rear seats that will have to be unbolted. I'm happy to do that but I thought that on this model there was no access from above and you have to drop the tank? Just don't fancy unbolting three seats etc to find no access hatch.

    Fuel Gauge Problem

I've looked through various threads on fuel gauge problems and I'm confused. I've read through the Haynes manual and it's not been any much help either... The fuel gauge isn't working on my 2002 SWB Defender Station Wagon (not a conversion). Normally in these situations I'd go to the sender and...
