If you believe the thermostat has failed in the closed position fitting another thermostat In the top hose won't stop the overheating, looks like replacing the original stat (presuming the water pump is ok) will be your only option.

Doubt if Singvogel will see your post as he no longer has his Freelander. The copper, or fibre, washer should fit between the cover and the fixing holes, if you fit it between the head of the bolt and the cover oil could still leak from under the cover. There's not usually a need for a washer...

The PTC heater on mine only comes on when the switch is at the end of the red section and when you can feel a definite click.

Is the Bosch MAF the correct one as the BMW one is different to the Freelander BMW.

Looking in their sellers shop they also list the same VCU but with OE GKN bearings, the price for this one is £435 so presumably the one listed above has non OE bearings.
