    Rear spring moved?

Here's the original, I figured it was too big and so posted a smaller version... I'll try moving the spring tomorrow. - Andrew

renewing parts - when do I stop? Should I be pro-active with it?

Already have the bottle jack, now I just need to find a good stong frame to do it in. Thanks for the tip! - Andrew

    Rear spring moved?

I was under the car today trying (and failing) to get a few things done and noticed the upper part of the passenger side rear spring wasn't in it's seat, but bent towards (but thank god not touching!) the tyre. Here is a few from above. From what I've read, I should just be able to jack up...

renewing parts - when do I stop? Should I be pro-active with it?

The op likely was, but not me. After doing some reading I think I prefer going with rubber/steel and bringing polybushes along as emergency spares (that I can fit in the bush if needed). I was thinking about something along the lines of what you suggest with the vice, or even using a bearing...

renewing parts - when do I stop? Should I be pro-active with it?

I know I have two different goals for my landy: 1) keep it running and on the road, and 2) learn how to fix as much as possible before I head out on my big trip (a year in Africa). Goal 1 would suggest not to touch anything that's not showing problems. But goal 2 means I should proactively...

    Propshaft arrived today

Thanks for the hint. I got a new rear propshaft at the same time as I got the front... figured I'd replace it soon anyways, that way I know it's good and the UJ's won't give me a massive failure anytime soon (replacements for both front and rear are Hardy Spicer). I'll do that test when I...

    Propshaft arrived today

The side windows do rattle, but I know that sound now... have to put something in there to stop them moving around. When it stops pouring bucket'o'rain here I'm going to do exactly what you suggested, walk around and listen for the rattle. - Andrew

    Propshaft arrived today

To add some oil to the fire.... The clunk was there at first when I bought the car. I noticed it mostly when pressing the clutch down to change gears. I figured it was due to the front UJ's but didn't get time to check. When the front propshaft fell off and I drove in diff lock, the clunk...

    Propshaft arrived today

Only a short hop to work and back, no highways. New propshaft is in now, and my funny "clunk" went away! - Andrew

    Propshaft arrived today

... finally! Been driving without a front propshaft for a couple weeks now. :( Was quite surprised to see it came with the UJ's already fitted, I'd ordered two with it and thought I had to assemble it myself! Was kind of looking forward to it, actually. No worries, some spare UJ's will come...

What have you done on your Defender today?

Tried to replace fuel filter, broke strap wrench trying to get the bloody thing off. Buying chain version after work today to take another shot. Replaced air filter. Took off the runner boards in prep for buying rock sliders. These were a bastard to remove. Changed the oil in the front...

    Boom!

Exactly what I was considering myself... might need to depending on the state of the two bolts that got hit. Don't think I feel like playing with the transfer box if I can avoid it. Thanks for the info! - Andrew

    Boom!

Is it normal that the bolts attaching the front propshaft bracket to the transfer box can't be removed? On my landy there isn't enough room to take them out before the heads of the bolt hit the transfer box. - Andrew

    Boom!

I put in an order for Hardy spicer propshafts and UJ's this morning... now have to wait until they arrive and throw start the relpacement process. Went under to have a look today as well as remove the stub from the transfer box. Couldn't manage it today, will have to try again. Two of the...

    Boom!

Yep, decided I'm going to replace the propshaft too... not worth risking it being a little bent. I also figure I'll need a new connector bit that attaches to the transfer box where it fell off (did I say at first it fell off the front diff? It didn't). Will replace the U joints in the rear...

    Boom!

That was the sound my front propshaft just made on my way home from work today as the universal joint attaching it to the front diff failed and it flew around under the car hitting stuff. I’m actually pretty happy (if kinda greasy) right now. A few reasons: I had been wondering if “that...

    Viscous fan not coming off

Success! I took a good look, and saw again that the problem was that the wrench was coming off the nut. I tried using a chisel to keep it in before, but took another shot. I put the special wrench firmly and carefully on the nut, then hammered in two small chisels between the wrench and the...

    Viscous fan not coming off

The spanner has two ends, 32mm and 36mm. The 36mm is VERY loose. The 32mm has about 3/4" of play at the end of the wrench (I was just out there and saw I exagerated 2"). It's hard to see, but I think the nut is acutally twisted or something, which would explain why the spanner is always...

    Viscous fan not coming off

Already using the special spanner.... the 32mm end is a bit loose on the nut though. The first time I put it on I noticed I had about 2 inches of play at the end of the spanner. - Andrew

    Viscous fan not coming off

I was hitting the wrench with a hammer, and generally trying to jerk it as well as applying slow pressure. I'll try banging on it via a bit of steel like you suggest, can't hurt. Not sure how to get any heat down there! - Andrew
