    Replacing my 4.6 V8 engine

I scored the replacement engine on ebay yesterday. This will have to be removed from the donor and shipped to Norway before I can get started. So I guess it will be at least 2-3 weeks before any serious work can commence. It will then be a question of my own time and access to a bit of workshop...

    Replacing my 4.6 V8 engine

Sandy, This is great info. Mine being lhd, I suppose the exhaust manifold issue will be reversed. So I can leave the propshafts in and only remove the engine mounts, gearbox and mounts stay put? Again, thanks a lot for your help!

    Replacing my 4.6 V8 engine

Sandy, Thanks for getting back to me. If I plan to pull the engine without removing the heads, will I have to remove the exhaust manifolds? Also, how did you get to the upper bolts on the bellhousing? It seems they are a bit fiddly. Cheers, Henrik

    Replacing my 4.6 V8 engine

Hi all, The old girl gave up on me last week. Massive coolant consumption, overheating, blowing head gasket, the lot. Rather than fiddling with the old engine, which probably also has a cracked block or loose liner, I'm putting in a replacement with a lot less miles on it. Now, there seems to...

OK OK So ive been in denial !!

Seriously?? So, if a liner does come loose, how far will it typically drop before it hits the lip? I'm just thinking that a possible cure would be to freeze the liners out of the block and shim them at the bottom before dropping them back in and then skim the top of the block. Still a lot of...

OK OK So ive been in denial !!

I've just entertained myself with the write-up on how to pin the liners to the block. The last bit confused me though... Is it true that there is a step at the bottom of the block to keep the liners from dropping down? If that is the case, and the cylinder head is clamped down on top, how is it...

    Excessive coolant pressure

Thanks for the input lads. I went by my mechanic yesterday and he said I had poor circulation so suggested I flush the system and check the thermostat before jumping to conclusions. New cap and thermostat is on the way and flush is due next week. Fingers crossed. Cheers Henrik

    Excessive coolant pressure

Hi all, My car is a 97 4.6 hse. After loosing coolant for some time I was dreading a failed head gasket or a slipped liner. However, after replacing hoses and clamps and fixing small leaks, the level has been rock steady for a week of daily use. Yesterday I noticed a bit of steam when I parked...

    P38 auto box gone sticky

Well, that would certainly explain it. It works perfectly when warmed through, so this sounds like a plausible explanation. Hoping it's not just wishful thinking....

    P38 auto box gone sticky

Hah! That explains why I've counted five gears even though I know it's got only four :D It behaves as you describe once hot, i.e. changes up or locks up when I ease off the throttle. It won't lock up when cold though. The fluid and filter were changed two years ago, so about 30.000km. I will...

    P38 auto box gone sticky

Hi all, This could very well be in my head, but I've got a feeling that my gearbox has changed character lately. It takes off and changes up just like it should, but then stops short of the last cog. It sits at 2100rpm at 80kph for about 5 minutes until it's properly hot, then changes up. After...

2006 SC Rangie reliability / longevity

Hi, thanks to everyone for the feedback. The P38 is getting old on me and I don't want to spend much more on it. It's been great - and still is - but I want something a bit "fresher" and I still love Range Rovers. The petrol consumtion on the P38 is pretty ourageous too, is the SC worse (if...

2006 SC Rangie reliability / longevity

Hi all, I'm currently running a '97 P38 4.6. It's slowly growing old on me and I've started looking for a replacement. The supercharged cars are just coming into a price range I could handle but they do have some miles on them. Can anyone advise on the general reliability of these cars...

    P38 Diesel conversion

OK, so it's obviously not turbocharged. A neat conversion, but even better with a blown engine of 250hp or thereabouts. I guess with a turbo the resulting torque would shred the gearbox... So you had no problems with interface to the instruments, anti-theft system and diagnostics? Cheers, Henrik

Webasto heater plumb in location to coolant

If you run a hose from the heater matrix exit to entry on the webasto, and then a line from webasto exit to where the matrix exit would normally be connected, you will dispose of pretty much all your heat in the engine block before it reaches the heater matrix. This would be my choice, if...

Webasto heater plumb in location to coolant

Mine is petrol and works like a charm. There's a guy in Poland who sells used ones on ebay, could have been I found him on German Ebay. It came with a new wiring loom, new timer and loads of coolant hose, fuel lines and connectors. Complete package for about £500. I added a GSM relay to mine...

Rob, Not to turn this into a slaggin' contest, but the first post was on Feb 8th, so I hardly think Pat has taken too long to investigate.... Henrik

    Blend Motors/Heater Temp Sensor?

Mine is behaving very similarly, so I'd be very interested to know what you find out. Usually the malfunction is accompanied by outside temperature display totally out of whack, like showing -40C when it's actually +5. Like yours, it's intermittent and sometimes works perfectly. It will usually...

cant turn engine over by hand

It's hard to give any answers this way or that, as what constitutes "a bit of a score" is in the eye of the beholder. You must check if your rod is bent, if your bore is scratched and maybe have someone look at that piston. You can get reconditioned cylinder heads, fully loaded, from a number of...

cant turn engine over by hand

So what you're saying is, that because someone knowlegeable suggested what the problem was likely to be, and turned out to be right, the owner should have just dropped his spanners and bought a new engine to start with? This guy needs support, not ridicule, and he might still be able to sort his...
