Hi all,
I'm currently running a '97 P38 4.6. It's slowly growing old on me and I've started looking for a replacement. The supercharged cars are just coming into a price range I could handle but they do have some miles on them. Can anyone advise on the general reliability of these cars, especially for the oily bits like engine and gearbox? The ones I'm looking at typically have 100k miles on the clock and I'd like to know how long they're expected to run without major work.

One thing that has me worried about these new LRs is that you need to lift the bodywork to change the engine ! These won't be in my price range anytime soon (they are bloody expensive here in Portugal) but it seems that with each upgrade LRs are slowly moving away from DIY mechanics :( And overall it seems that parts for those are much more expensive that for the P38.
 
Asking how long a rangie will last is like asking if it will snow on Christmas Day. No one really knows, you can attempt a prediction but you will prob be wrong. You never actually know for sure untill it either does or doesn't.

+1 on that. 100k on the clock - would expect major work any time soon, possibly driving it back home from the seller. Is it not worth spending yer hard earned on the P38??

Where abouts in Portugal are you Mcapinha? Used to work a lot with a factory in Barcelos near Porto. Lovely people, miss the country. City break to Lisbon is on the cards.
 
Petrol consumption is outrageous on the SC !

And from what iv heard if the supercharger fails you will need to take out a mortgage for the new one ! Lol

Hi, thanks to everyone for the feedback. The P38 is getting old on me and I don't want to spend much more on it. It's been great - and still is - but I want something a bit "fresher" and I still love Range Rovers.
The petrol consumtion on the P38 is pretty ourageous too, is the SC worse (if you're not very heavy-footed)? Second hand superchargers can be had out of a Jag breaker's so that doesn't worry me too much. However, if a failure causes it do discharge pieces of metal down the intake tubes, that's another matter entirely....

I'm sure the S/C stat is about 17mpg
And the standard 4.4v8 is only 18mpg so not much diff

Yea probably real world driving it is. But parkers say the stated mpg is 17 combined

But then agen they say mine should be 18 combined and I only get about 14. But that's with AT tyres on
 
In all complete seriousness I recon mine has cost me £8100 in the last 12 months. That's fuel, tyres, brakes, new rad, new stat, new water pump, new aux water pump, new track rod ends (both), new rack end, oil service, LPG service, tax, mot and fuel

Plus the £800 insurance

Mines 4.4 v8 with LPG and just about to hit 115000 miles
Had a new box just before I bought it

yes they are real bad, i was offered a sport s/c last week at a very tempting price i took it on a test drive and wasnt that impressed really, dont get me wrong they get a move on but so did the fuel guage,gave it a miss i prefer my full fat vogue it just seems right:D
 
Mines a 2010 S/C, only had it 3 weeks but its averaging about 15MPG, but I'm pretty heavy footed and its not been on long runs yet
 
Its the D3 and RR Sports that need the body removing to do an engine swop,not the L322 models.
The L322 as a car in general seems better overall than the others,the engine,N/A or supercharged is a better bet than the BMW ****e it replaced.I wouldnt be too worried as long as the car has been looked after.Water damage to electrics is more of a worry on any recent LR product.
