    P38 coolant advice

It is ok to top up your anti freeze with neat water as long as you're not doing it every couple of days or even monthly. If you are topping up frequently then you must have a leak. You should change your a/freeze (corrosion inhibitor) every two years and run at 50/50 a/freeze/water and just...

    New Thermostat & Viscous Fan?

You can loosen the fan coupling with a big screwdriver and a hammer. Use the screwdriver like a chisel and have the blade just behind one of the flats on the fan nut a couple of good belts with a heavy hammer WILL loosen the fan, then just spin it off. Make sure when you spin it off that it...

    Auto gearbox

OK James, I have noticed some of your past replies in other threads re auto transmission problems, and it appears to me you know what you're talking about. What do you think my problem is? Do the torque converters lock up in 3rd and 4th when under load, if not then why do i seem to get 4 shifts...

    Auto gearbox

Its a 2.5 dse. I don't know when the oil was changed last as i have only done about 15k but no records from previous owners. Would dirty oil cause the symptoms i have described?

    Auto gearbox

Gidday, I have a couple of queries with regard to the transmission shifting on my rangie. I have noticed over the last month or so that when i am cruising at around 110kmh (65-70 mph) the trans seems to drop down a shift (or the lock up converter drops out) for no apparent reason. No change in...

    power steering

thanks for your input guys the landy is not mine so i may not go ahead with the project. Modifications to that sort of extent require certification over here and it can be quite expensive. Perhaps i will encourage my mate to do a bit of weightlifting and build his muscles up,. At least he won't...

    power steering

Gidday, i am doing some work on a mates 109 ex army land rover and i have the right front guard off. This seems like an ideal time to put power steering on the old bus, so i'm after some info on what bits to use. I thought that i would just be able to bolt the p/steering off of an old rangey...

    2.5 dse fan coupling

spot on guys thats all good info, the stat and aircon fans sounds like the way to go,as its not that much warmer in nz although we do have some big hills. I will pm datatek for the info and give it a go, but if i stilll have overheat when towing,or over the rimutakas (local hills) then i will...

    2.5 dse fan coupling

As far as i know BMW NZ didn't bring in any beamers with that particular motor. I spoke to the local bm dealer and they said that they would need a part number to price up the part. If the same coupling is used on other BMW engines then i could maybe source one from a wrecker, but i need to know...

    2.5 dse fan coupling

Gidday, i have been having a few overheat issues with the old girl and have decided to replace the viscous fan coupling. The availability of non genuine parts for anything other than a jappa in NZ is **** poor to say the least and i don,t want to fork out 2 weeks wages for the genuine item...

97 Auto 2.5 DSE: What gearbox?

Gidday,i am reading this thread with interest as my rangey has a strange shift from 3rd to 4th, it seems to do about three gear shifts between three and four when under load, but on light load, the gear shift is ok. i thought that perhaps it was being caused by a worn clutch pack. I was...

    freelander

Gidday, my old man is thinking about buying a freelander and wants my advice. I know they give a few problems, but don't really know that much about them. He is 75 and only does between 5-10,000km a year, so it wouldn't be getting overworked. Petrol or diesel? any models we should steer well...

    door lock actuators

gidday, I have got a couple of 2nd hand door lock actuators for the front doors of my 98 dse, but they are slightly different at the plug. The 2nd hand ones have 2 plugs on each actuator, six wires in total, but mine only has 1 plug and three wires that are hard wired into the unit, six wires in...

    Oh dear EAS problems

Cheers guys, I am trying to source an overhaul kit for the air compressor as a matter of course, meanwhile i have ordered an msv 2 extreme from bbs so i can sort it out myself. A bit of overkill i know, but there are a few other niggly little problems that i want to investigate also and there...

    Oh dear EAS problems

Driving home from work today, daydreaming about how well my RR has been going lately i was awoken by a steady beeping noise. I looked down at the dash and there was a message on the readout "EAS fault" " Max speed 55 KMH" The rest of my ride home was a bit bumpier than normal, but when i got...

P38 Overheating - Best way forward please?

As long as there are no metal splinters on the drain plug, it's ok. Is it a manual transmission or auto? Auto's don't like coolant in them, if it's a manual then it is unlikely to have done any damage.
