All done and working perfectly. Not as easy as some write up suggests, however you can skip some steps too. The flat bits like look like paper binds can be easily removed by inserting a thin long screwdriver into the end and levering out.
The part where the base meets the back no need to remove the big hog rings or the paper binder thing.
I replaced all the hog rings with double zip ties.

I repaired the break in the wire which were in the crease of the seat- and had burned a a 3 inch section of the foam, I just cut out the burnt bit and soldered in a new section of cable. shrinkwraped it all. didnt have spray glue so i just used some iron on hem tape, and quick iron over. I didn't change the thermostat as i was not sure if i needed a NC or NO type.

took me over 4hours to complete including a proper clean of the leather and the surrounding carpet.

Nice one .
How hot does your seat get now its all working ?
Also is it a sure thing that the concertinaed wiring is going to spring
out all over the place,i do have some spray adhesive though !

It gets to 93 deg F. the original temp.
The wires do not spring out too much - very easy to put them back- you can use a bit of masking tape, but after i saw the burn on the wire and seat- i didn't bother!
Spray adhesive should work, not sure if it smells on heatup???
tip on the hog ring removal- Get the long nose pliers and rotate the ring so you can see both ends of the ring, hold it firmly and get a screwdriver and jam it inbetween the the two ends and widen them, get another long nose plier and bend the ring open - you should then be able to rotate them free. Fecking silly system- they could have easily made an side acess to slide a rod through all the rings and secure with a zip tie.

Woops, didnt think about the adhesive smelling.
Prefer the smell of leather to burning :D
Like you, im going for the twin cable ties instead of hogrings.
Bet your glad its done now :5bparty:

5 pcs Temperature Controlled Switch Thermostat 45℃(N.O) on eBay (end time 09-Dec-10 15:31:36 GMT)

This is the thermostat ive ordered, just have to be patient now as the delivery speed may take a while. As in up to a month  :D

Still, cutting in at 95f and out at 113f should keep my butt toasty if it works :D
......................................................

What a balls up

Ive just realised i ordered (no) normally open thermostats, when in fact i should have ordered (nc) normally closed !!

So ive ordered some nc's with the same company today, another £4 or so but its longer to wait which im not good at usually :D

Well ive just received my uprated thermostats from Japan, in only 9 days which i think is good.
Ive now got normallyopen and normallyclosed versions, although i only need the nc's ;)

Just need to delve in and get on with it now :D

Got a set of long nose pliers and some heavy duty cable ties, just need some motivation now

I did mine the other day took an hour and a half per seat - get wire cutters and cut the rings and as you say use cable ties - I also on the passenger seat had to take the whole element out its easy and very straight forward popped it back with a bit of spray mount no smell -- yet good luck

Seeing as its gona snow and everyone seems to be doing it this week i did my drivers seat today (and found £1.02p !).Not a bad job as long as you take your time. I used the cable tie trick and it works very well, mine had snapped in the crease as well, again it had burnt the foam. I used a single bit of speaker wire and just made it a bit longer so as to help with flexing etc. I did both sides of the seat as the other side was starting to crack the insulation.
Not really sure how hot it should feel but i would say its warmer, i think!

I also did mine today, but only found 20p and a ticket to the 2005 earls court motor show ;)

I fitted one of my new uprated thermostats as well as repairing both cables where they go at the front. One had broke and the other looked ropey so got replaced with new wire.

Unfortunately i had to take the upright squab/back rest apart as i had a burnt out wire in there to :(

Thanks to the new angled long nose pliers i bought, the hog rings came apart pretty easy, and they also got replaced with cable ties.

I havent tried out the seats yet as it was near dark when i finished, and i'm to sore to fanny about any more for one day :D

Ive taken a number of pics which i'll post up tomorrow,if it will help others at a later date :)

Awesome read, it's just coming in to summer down here, so it gives me six months to get mine sorted before winter. I haven't researched the seat heaters yet but it's been on my to do list so no need know as its all here. Thanks guys.

I've been considering doing my heated seats, but if I'm ripping the seats apart, I'd love to replace the foam in the base of my drivers seat.

The previous owner must have been related to an elephant as the foam is badly squished...more so than most P38's I've seen. Can you buy replacement foam?

Otherwise I'd thought of the seat base from a passenger seat as they never seem as squiched as the driver's ones...I assume the foam bases are identical - passenger and drivers side that is?

Cheers,
