P38A Going through radiators- not overheating

That’s one of my go to images when doing cooling jobs :) I didn’t have the throttle housing inlet hose. And my throttle housing return hose was instead plugged in to the manifold.

P38A Going through radiators- not overheating

Makes sense, thanks! I tried the water leak test on the valves today. Just one was leaking. Interestingly, though, when I went to tip all the water out of the exhaust ports, a bunch of oil went with it on 2 of the ports!

P38A Going through radiators- not overheating

Quick update, ended up pulling the heads off due to the sniff test result. But unfortunately I don't see anything hugely obvious. Some gouges in the block, maybe a hairline gouge in the HG, but no steam cleaned cylinders or blow outs from what I can tell. I've attached some images. Something...

What did you do with your Range Rover today

I’ve done the coolant system dance till I was blue in the face. Going through radiators, hoses, replaced this and that. Ended up getting a sniff test that confirmed bubbles coming up in the overflow tank. Which is why I pulled the heads. No LPG.

What did you do with your Range Rover today

What symptoms lead you to remove the heads in the first place? I was really hoping to find something obviously wrong with my headgasket because I have symptoms :(

What did you do with your Range Rover today

Yeah, no steam cleaned cylinders. I've had overpressuring and sluggish underload/when hot. So something is askew. Found these on the HG as well.

P38A Head Gasket Kit & ARP Bolts ?

I did this today. It was somewhat painful but I managed to get that bolt out with a series of extensions and wobble joints without removing the steering shaft. The first bolt was a PITA as well actually.

What did you do with your Range Rover today

Drivers side head removed today, looking less good than the passenger side. I can feel that gouge with my finger nail pretty easily. Not sure if it's completely cracked or not, I don't have a dye penetrating test yet.

What did you do with your Range Rover today

Got the passenger side head off today :vb-smash: There was heaps of coolant in the head and it spilled into the 4th cylinder :( The cylinder probably ended up being 1/5th full of coolant and oil which is un-ideal. Put a bunch of rags in to soak it up. Hopefully drivers side head off tomorrow!

P38A Head Gasket Kit & ARP Bolts ?

I'm in the middle of a top-end refresh, I was looking at the Roverparts gasket kit from Atlantic british. I'm just about to tackle the exhaust manifold, mine look munted so not particularly excited to get started on that :vb-smashy: I had an unexpected adversary in the form of a power steering...

P38A Going through radiators- not overheating

Howdy friends, quick update, put a new rad cap on and observed some coolant out the overflow. So I did another sniff test while the car was nice and hot after a drive and I could definitely see a slight colour change in the test liquid this time, as well as a bubble coming up every second or so...

P38A Going through radiators- not overheating

    - Previous owner put a new rad in mid-2021. - Replaced the above late-2022 with https://www.allfourx4.com.au/Radiator-suitable-for-Range-Rover-P38-V8-EFI-from-1999-on-PCC106850/ - Replaced the above late 2023 with a local shop's radiator. Looks very very similar to the above. Hesitant to buy...

P38A Going through radiators- not overheating

I’ve done the expansion tank and cap dance before. I replaced the tank probably a year and a half ago, along with the cap as they were both warped. I reckon my current cap is on its way out. It still tightens fully, but the thread feels a little weird.

P38A Going through radiators- not overheating

I had my OBD reader on and the coolant temp didn’t get too high, unless that sensor is cooked, or maybe it got really hot in a localised area. The hills and loss of power started around 1:20 Agreed about the rad, once it started leaking I thought that’d be it. /shrug

P38A Going through radiators- not overheating

Bit of an update: Did a couple of test drives, around 20-30 minutes each. No more leaking from the heater inlet, but there was in fact a very slight leak from the bottom of the radiator- seems I was wrong in my previous post as I could clearly tell it was from the rad. Seems the car had to be...

P38A Going through radiators- not overheating

So I got that heater hose off and it looks like the pipes are just fine  As I was wrestling with the hose, I could see coolant seeping out of it- it was split. Looks like whoever replaced it last just use a regular hose which was too small. The correct hose should be slightly flared at...

What's worse, getting the dash apart to reach the heater matrix, or doing a head gasket? :stars:

P38A Going through radiators- not overheating

The kit just says to run the car longer if it’s a diesel. I had the tester in the expansion tank for a good 25 while revving on and off. That second video I linked above has that :)

P38A Going through radiators- not overheating

I should also note that I've found another point of leakage; the heater inlet hose, on the heater matrix side :( EDIT TO ADD SOME OTHER IMAGES OF THINGS: So this is the before and after of the gasket test, no difference in colour that I can see. According to the test it should go pretty...
