    Not again.

With it being a v8 and worked on before you probably keep a close eye on the coolant level! If you can feel air and pressure in the top hose then its most likely head gasket or block gone, air stays there and bubbles back to the expansion tank causing the coolant level to vary. Booting it can...

Cheers wammers, I will have a go, with another flush after I get back from holiday. Going down to shell island wales for a week and the weather will mean I am out driving if it rains! Few 100 miles might sort it out. Incidentally no clunking today, smooth through the gears, you are right...

Surge shifting has come back, sometimes. And clunk started again, sometimes. Seems transmission fix worked for a bit. Perhaps something else is about too pop.

The heads are of! Valves knackerd!

You should be able to check the dowls length vs the depth of the holes in the head/block! Check them. Another note! my liners had not dropped, they where leaking though. Have you got photos of gaskets and block, agree staining would show.

    You and your P38

Always wanted a range rover, I was originally looking for a Classic but the Mrs wasnt to keen and it is now getting hard to find one that doesn't need welding back together. My old man had a 3 door classic vogue and regrets ever getting rig of it. £800 quid in px for a flippin punto, had some...

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/cracked-block-diagnosis-168462.html Same thing happened to me, have look at these photos. You could see where the head gaskets had failed. None had failed to the point off letting combustion gas into the water front and back are the only point this can...

96 4.6 Clunk slowing down when autobox shofts from 2nd to first

Left work after dropping 3 litres out and refilling with Lucas stuff and new atf I had left 2 litres. Still got the surge after a few few 100 meters. Then got on the motorway, the final drive came on at lower speed, hmm. Came of the motorway and slowed down to a stop at the lights after 5...

96 4.6 Clunk slowing down when autobox shofts from 2nd to first

The rear prop just bolts straight to the handbrake drum I think, the clunk comes from inside the transfer box. I have just drained another 3 litres of atf out of the autobox and put some lucas transmission fix in. I am thinking that the perhaps the autobox is downshifting roughly ocasionally...

96 4.6 Clunk slowing down when autobox shofts from 2nd to first

I am thinking its the chain because there is no whine or noise at all, the box shift to low easily and the VC seems to be working ok, not seized anyway. Where is the best place to get a chain from?

I thought that, but sound is definately comming from the transfer box, Found this vid on youtube, this is the same problem I have. But doesnt give a diagnosis. If autobox is in park you would think it would still do it? Range Rover P38 Transfer Box Noises - YouTube

96 4.6 Clunk slowing down when autobox shofts from 2nd to first

Its play in the transfer box somewhere, just got it up on the ramps, grabbed both output props when in neutral and found play. Doesn't do it when in park? Is there a chain in there and tensioner I could change?

Cheers Druim will give it a try, I see it has had good reviews. I am a sure the autobox has been out before I think, I had bell housing bolts missing and loose when I came to get the engine out last year. Fingers crossed it just needs a filter change or its some slack somwhere else...

Who said this was a good idea??

Bollocks, drop it at their door and get them to do it. Obviously they new about the fault. Bstards. Or live with it and sort it out yourself, being an able and experienced chap I am sure you will sort it out. Cracking motor, after one too.

how do i remove the oil pressure relief valve?

Not arsey, just how it is, Wammers has a way of being strait to the point which I respect whole heartedly. Anything else is a waste of time. Some people are just too politically correct and namby pamby around these days take some criticism the way its meant. Learn boys and girls. Generally!
