Thanks Jayridium. That's what I was hoping for. My plan is to get a box and rip its guts out, so it looks the part while giving me better performance & mpg. I'm aware 2 strokes need a back pressure but not 4 strokes.

I discovered they, the original Torx screws, were made from mild steel that rounded-off easily. Rusty as hell too, which is probably why!! This meant that out of the 12, 3 were difficult to remove and needed drilling-out followed by an Easyout!

It's the starting! When cold it starts with a slight struggle. As it gets warmer it takes more turns to get started with a slight screeching sound from the starter area. When hot, it has to turn over a lot of times before it kicks into life. The rev's seem sluggish as it turns too.

I reckon there might well be more owners with faulty valves than is known. How many have slow leaks, I wonder, pumping expensive cans of sealant into the system or paying a garage to do it for them? Mine is fixed. Brill. Worth that £20.

Having slept on the problem I have come to a decision. I'm replacing the starter motor with a new one. Thinking about it, there is a peculiar screeching noise from it when starting, and when hot I'm certain it's turning the engine at a slower pace. I'll let you know how it goes.
