It wouldn't hurt to do the head gasket and belts before you install it. That would give you a good idea of the condition and would get it in good shape for the next few years service.

As we don`t require rear fog lights here I have rewired the taillights to improve their visibility/brightness. I have also repurposed the rear fog light switch to operate the relay to my front driving lights. Works very well! OK Here's a better picture! :)

Took the Hippo for a nice long test drive now that it's running again. Of course after all the work it's running better than ever. :(

I`m not gone yet! I agree, it was an unlucky failure. I do still have my MGF. As a matter of fact I had to reinsure it to get me to work when the Hippo packed it in. It`s no fun driving through a blizzard white-out in the smallest car on the freeway-Scary! By the end of December I had had enough...

And it happened so innocently. I was just accelerating into a left turn from a standstill and it started misfiring. I thought it had popped into limp mode but it didn't respond to switch off/switch on. And that was the start of 3 1/2 months of diagnostics and repairs.:eek:

It's a different situation here. Freelanders are just about extinct here. V6 Freelanders are considered specialty vehicles and are being scrapped for minor reasons, cam belts, VCUs etc. There are few independent shops to work on them and as they have a reputation for grenading engines and no-one...

That makes me wonder how many poor suckers have scrapped their Freelander or bought new $1000.+ VCUs not knowing that a couple of plugs, a gallon of solvent and 20 bucks worth of fluid would put their unit back into action.

But what does Bells do in the way of a refurb? Is it just a drain and fill or do they open them up, inspect the plates and recondition them somehow? For us here in the colonies it's a moot point as no-one here refurbs them anyway.

It seems too easy that the two units would be basically the same in spite of having different part numbers and a massive price difference. I know these things often don't make sense but it does leave me wondering why. On one hand I wonder, like Nodge does what detail differences there may be...

The V6 VCU does have a different part number and at least in pictures appears larger than the 4 cyl version so that may be worth keeping in mind re: volume.

You use dual filament bulbs, holders and connectors to get two functions in one bulb. It does take some rewiring though.

You would think that given the price of the things they would work! I am thinking the link led is a dud. It's the first auto part I have bought (or anything for that matter) that was made in Egypt. I have another lead on it's way so I will know soon enough.
