Resurecting an old fred, who knows how different the mg6 k series engine is from the mg zt k series engine?

Very little difference between them. From what I see, most components are the same. The HG and all other head related components are interchangeable.

Was just doing a bit of research on it last niggt and it seems the quality in the MG6 lump was much better, there is one for sale on ebay now but with no managment system and loom.

The electronics wouldn't work on the Freelander anyway.

The engine, turbo and manifold are almost identical, bar the additional ribbing found on the Chinese engine.

I've heard that the quality of the pistons and the tolerances (and weights) are not as good as the original British versions though...? But otherwise, seemingly, a robust engine choice.

Ive been doing a lot of research lately and so Id agree with you. I did read however that the materials used were changed slightly and the casting process improved.

The MG6 is so much cheaper than what scrappies want just for the K turbo block. I think I might try it out.

The scrappies know that there is serious interest in these engines these days - and the price reflects the demand. But the MG6 would be a canny choice. Not the most common of cars, but at least the engine would make for an interesting conversion in anything that already uses a K-series block! :D

I think you're right! It will definitely fit as Ive read the blog of somone who fitted the mg6 in to his mg zt turbo and we all know the zt engine fits. It'll be interesting to see if I can use the zt ecu on the loom or might just go for aftermarket ecu. Need to look into this...

So I received an email from Mark at Kmaps. He has just completed fitting an MG6 engine to an auto box, he didnt state wether that was for an MG6 or otherwise.

So it should lever straight in but we'll see. I'm buying a cheap engine off fleabay, its removed with the gearbox and turbo still attached, need to use my loom and intake manifold and throttle to run it. The engine ran apparently but was removed as the clutch had gone.... not sure about that story, I might be tempted to just rebuild the engine before I drop it in.

Ye
It wouldn't hurt to do the head gasket and belts before you install it. That would give you a good idea of the condition and would get it in good shape for
the next few years service.

Yeah, I was planning on going a bit deeper and going for dropping the crankshaft off and replacing bottom end bearings and a thorough inspection of liners etc. The engine is going to hve a hard life in the freelander due to weight of the vehicle and weight of my right foot :D

I'm a bit shy of doing the head gasket to be honest, If it all looks ok and the plugs come out ok then I'd like to leave the chinese workmanship in place. I can't see anything that says otherwise that they may have sorted the HG issue on these.

I'm stupid really, there was an MG ZT in my local scrappy for 125 GBP all in, i just couldnt be bothered to remove it in a muddy field in January. Really wish I did now!

Stuff like that happens to me all of the time. Blooming annoying. Although you may be tempted to substitute another phrase ;)
