Defender 1997 tdi 300 With the engine running I can't select a gear, can't select low or high range either. With engine off I can select all gears and high / low. Been standing about a week, no problems like this before. Any ideas what to check?

My 90 300 tdi does 55 max. If I want to go faster or long distance I use the BMW. Defenders aren't for speed.

If I understand it correctly, you had expensive non-standard parts stolen and you are going to replace them with more expensive non-standard parts? Are you going to leave the vehicle in the same place while you are on night shift?

Don't have anything to do with them, they will rip you off.

Looks good but the state of the chassis and bulkhead are key factors. If they are good, I would start at £10k :-)

Don't do either. Bare metal can be hosed down, insulation and plywood are hard to clean and trap water.

Carpet in the footwells just soaks up water and causes rust. Best without :-)

No problems, saw the image and thought of this thread. Looks like it tipped over on a downhill right hander, driver error and top heavy :)

Does it have an MOT and insurance?

If you have nice alloys, drug dealer tyres, roof rack, winch, snorkel, a rack full of lights, plus loads of tools in the back, leather seats etc. You are much more likely to be targeted by scum that will dismantle and sell the bits. If you have an old bog standard scruffy Defender with lots of...

"That’s “dynamic” loading, so driving loads, not static." ....so your not going to drive it then, just leave it stationary. You'll know the safe weight limit when the doors won't shut or you roll it on a bend.

Just checked Howling Moon website, weight for their basic model is 72 kg. Do you weigh less than 3 kg ?

Maximum roof loading for a Defender is 75 kg. How much does your roof rack, tent and person(s) weigh?

Stay at a B and B, hire a canoe. Simple :-)

Overloading the roof, top heavy, climb up the vehicle, sleep on a roof rack, can't use multi storey car parks, make the vehicle more likely to be nicked, climb down in the dark to have a wee.. .... Sounds fun

They are just fashion statements. Sleeping on the roof of a vehicle is nuts, get a B and B or a tent.
