    Dashboard illumination Series 2a/3

My Landy is wired such that for the dash lights to be in, you need both the dash light switch on *and* the sidelights/dipped/main beam on, too. Kinda makes sense. Maybe you've not got your regular lights on, too. And yes, be very careful about moving wires of unknown condition around, with the...

    S3 2.25 petrol won’t crank

Just to clarify, WD40 is *not* penetrating oil. That's the stuff to avoid, but any of proper penetrating oil, diesel or ATF should help.

How to recommission a Series Land Rover?

Oh yes, don't get me wrong...there are rubber items, particularly safety-critical areas, where it's definitely a good idea to replace with new items. I guess I was just warning against replacing things that are still OK as a matter of course. If it's lasted 20 years, it may well last another 20...

How to recommission a Series Land Rover?

That was one of the objectives I had when I started my rebuild, but actually quite a few of the rubber bits were still in fairly good condition. And new rubber versions are of questionable quality that looks like it'll only last a year or so. So you might want to change quite everything.

    Series 3 Carb problems

Yeah, I've had this several times, too. I assume it depends on the exact type of rubber used, but yes, petrol does make it expand. Very annoying.

    Series 3 Carb problems

I will check the bowl, but I'm pretty sure there's no water around. I've not explicitly tried choking it when it's spluttering, although the choke has 'felt right' as it warms up. I'll also check the filter. That's an interesting idea about using a small gravity tank. I'll try and lash...

    Series 3 Carb problems

Ah, OK. So electric pumps aren't necessarily the solution to all problems! I was thinking exactly that I should get a refurb kit for me original pump and stick that back on again. A whole new pump wasn't that much more expensive and seemed an easier swap, but I guess I've fallen into the...

    Series 3 Carb problems

Yeah, I dare say filters weren't used years ago, but I really don't want to run without one. I would have though the v8 version would have been fairly high flow given its intended application, and it ran OK with one before the rebuild. I'm told the weber carb is particularly susceptible to...

    Series 3 Carb problems

Not been able to spend much time on this recently. I had a quick look on the driveway the other day, but it behaves impeccably when just idling and running under no load. But went for a drive again today, and it's still misbehaving. I've not yet run through the list of things to check on here...

    Series 3 Carb problems

The coil was new, and again, I'm puzzled why there would be such a definitive cut-off with engine speed. But I guess they aren't too expensive, so will try and get a new one to swap over. No, I didn't lap the faces of the carb, but I think there was a fairly even mark around the edge of the...

    Series 3 Carb problems

So took the Landy out for a run again, today (the first time since cleaning the carb on May 28th). The good news is that it seems to idle a lot better and more consistently than before. Plus, now the tab is back where it should be, I can trim the idle speed to bring it up a bit when it was...

    Series 3 Carb problems

OK, good, that's what I thought and what I did. I was just surprised that the amount of vacuum at idle resulted in such a change in timing when I reconnected the pipe to the carb. I may well play around with this, and adopt the 'by ear' approach. I want to eliminate the random element I seem to...

    Series 3 Carb problems

I didn't think the compression was _too_ bad, which is why I didn't redo the engine while it was out. But I realise it isn't perfect. However, I now wonder whether I did that test with the engine cold. I repeated the test today after it had warmed up properly, and I got some much better...

    Series 3 Carb problems

It was in reasonable condition when it arrived, to be fair, but it's sat outside for a couple of years since then. I didn't think it was that bad, but I'll give it a clean up. The carb was also new in 2019, but also sat outside while I was rebuilding the chassis. It had certainly got a bit...

    Series 3 Carb problems

Well, I did one a couple of years ago when I was getting the engine running again before taking it out - the figures weren't particularly good. And it's then sat under a tarp until I refitted it at the end of last year, and has run around 20 miles since. I probably should have investigated...

    Series 3 Carb problems

No progress yet, unfortunately. I've actually been away from home (shock, horror!) visiting family for my girlfriend's birthday. Felt strangely uncomfortable... Anyway, before doing much else. I intend to take the rocker cover off sometime - possibly this week - to check the tappets. I'm hoping...

    Series 1 Series 1 4x2

I've just re-read my first reply. It was a bit abrupt, wasn't it? It wasn't meant to me any kind of whinge that it didn't need a new thread, just that there was a thread that already contained a reasonable about of relevant information. Sorry if I came across as being stroppy - I didn't mean to be.

Haha! That's always the way! :D I've done my fair share of asking questions that have already been answered. Fortunately nobody has shouted at me too loudly! :)

    Series 3 Carb problems

Managed to take a quick look at it today. Plug 1 looks fairly good. However, plug 2 is looking rather black. Rich or just oily? I'm a bit confused by this...something odd going on somewhere. I am losing a bit of oil, so it might be number 2 cylinder is a bit worn somewhere, and I'm burning...
