    Hi

Then most likely the cam belt for the rear cylinders has broken or the cam or timing drive for those cylinders has failed.

What have you done to your Freelander today

What a terrible environment you have to live in. ;)

    Hi

It sounds like it could be a broken cam belt, but and half reasonable auto shop would diagnose that. If it is a broken cam belt it would need new cam belts (3 of them), heads off to check valves and pistons (not an easy job) and possible some new valves and maybe a piston or two and maybe...

    Hi

It would be a big help to know the model, year and engine in it. It would also help to describe what happened when the engine "shut off".

What have you done to your Freelander today

Rear end grumbles have gone. Bearings and seals arrived yesterday morning - only ordered last Friday night. Thank you Royal Mail, NZ Post only delayed delivery by a day. Anyway the diff rebuild went well. Required a slight adjustment to the diff carrier position, which is a pain in the butt...

What have you done to your Freelander today

That reminds me of a British crime series. Sorry, cannot remember the name, my brain is like a LR - it leaks. Anyway, the Chief Super pulls up in his Rover (I think) and stops on the no parking area in front of the station. A keen young constable sprints up and offers to park the car. The...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Grumbly diff out and in bits. No surprises, spalling on carrier bearing cones and rollers, same on pinion bearing. Crown wheel and pinion teeth are good, very consistent contact pattern. My pinion nut undoing tool - needed a 28mm socket, but did not have one. Inch and an eighth did fine...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Yes, and thank you very much for satisfying my demand! I suspect they are in demand here because the problem of wheel stealing is not as common here in NZ as in other parts of the world, so the original locking wheel nuts are just a bloody nuisance and get swapped out fairly frequently.

    Pre face lift freelander issues

For the clutch issue, either the clutch needs bleeding (a special job) or the clutch slave cylinder bracket is loose or cracked. I had a similar problem with brakes, it was caused by a wheel sensor that was slightly too far from the tone wheel on the drive shaft. The ABS thought a wheel was...

What have you done to your Freelander today

I noticed a grumble in the backend - of the Freelander as well. So pulled the rear diff out and one of the carrier bearings is quite worn. Also the pinion is rough when I turn it. The pinion felt quite smooth when I turned it in the car. If it had only been bearings I would have got them...

What have you done to your Freelander today

I did suggest cutting a hole in the floor and "doing it from underneath", an approach probably favoured by Series and Defender owners, but the seat was out when I got there.

What have you done to your Freelander today

I used long nose pliers on mine, but did crack a bit. Maybe preheating the plastic strips with a hot air gun would help. I suspect the strips were more pliable when they came out of the factory. Another thing, when swapping passenger squab to driver's side, 2 holes for the side plastic finish...

Great description Grumpy. I bet you even comment your code - I could never come to grips with the * function, found it ran fine without it ;)

What have you done to your Freelander today

Did a defender upgrade to my new FL XE yesterday. It came with no radio so I acquired a 2014 Defender unit for a good price. As expected, it has less functionality and performance than the older Freelander one would have had, but it looks OK. Now I have a better understanding of why Defender...
