P38 GEMS - couple of questions on coolant change

Good point on the thermostat. I am changing from IAT (of unknown age in my P38 hence the need to change) to OAT as recommended in the handbook. (Havoline XLC). I assume the cylinder block drain plug is above the thermostat hence the need to remove the engine-side pipe.

P38 GEMS - couple of questions on coolant change

A couple of questions when looking at the workshop manual - procedure for changing coolant: 1. The manual says remove the LH cylinder block drain plug but specifically says do not remove the RH one - why is that? 2. It doesn't say anything about draining the heater matrix - should I make sure...

    P38 Coolant - confused.com...!

Thanks for that - looks like my P38 has IAT when it is best to have OAT. I'll drain, flush and refill with Havoline XLC OAT. As ever, actual experience of people in this forum is invaluable.

Anyone do green laning Scarborough area

Please leave green lanes to walkers, runners and horse-riders. If you want to drive on a rough broken surface, try the A66.

    P38 Coolant - confused.com...!

Yes, that is as I understand it, with the proviso that people say you can't mix IAT and OAT as it apparently forms a gel and blocks the radiator. The P38 handbook refers to Havoline XLC which is OAT so I guess that is the one to use, mixed 50/50. I'll switch to XLC with a good flushing out at...

    P38 Coolant - confused.com...!

1997 P38 4.0SE I thought I understood the various types of coolant... Blue/green IAT for older cars (mine currently has this colour) - change every 2-3 years. Red/pink OAT for newer cars. Never to be mixed with IAT. Lasts indefinitely. HOAT (yellow?) - not sure about this one but never used it...

    P38A Cannot open drivers door

Silly me - of course you are correct. D'oh! - I have just remembered that I actually did change one of these cables when I was fixing the passenger side latch last year. I noticed that the cable was beginning to fray at the internal lever end. Picked up a "new old stock" one on eBay for £24.99...

    P38A Cannot open drivers door

Thanks for this - printed and saved as it is exactly the sort of solution to keep for future reference. Mind you, now that my RR knows that I know how to fix it, it won't go wrong.

Yet another scammer report - it is not stolen, or at least has not been reported as stolen. Where did these junk "stolen" reports come from?

    P38 4.0SE 1997 - A/C condenser info request

Rimmer Bros got back to me with info that seems to line up with what everyone is saying: There are 5 different part numbers which according to Land Rover there is one of each. JUU100220L 7mm JUU100230L 9mm JUU100100L 11mm JUU100240L 14mm STC3110 17mm I have ordered a set, and will...

Ah, I mis-read it: they really mean "the condenser end of the pipe that then goes to the dryer".

    P38 4.0SE 1997 - A/C condenser info request

Apologies, my mistake on my earlier reply. The supplier's descriptions on these don't match the sizes (listing says pipe-to-dryer and pipe-to-compressor) and when I asked, they said they could not supply pipe-to-condenser o-rings. They told me to get them from JLR. Who don't have them of course...

    P38 4.0SE 1997 - A/C condenser info request

Those 9mm and 11mm o-rings are for later model pipe-to-compressor joints. That is the type of compressor where the pipes join from different directions. If both pipes into the compressor join from the same side, they won't fit. Attached photo shows the earlier type of compressor (GEMS) that they...

    P38 4.0SE 1997 - A/C condenser info request

That's my worry - the kit generic o-ring being the right diameter but the wrong thickness. I'll keep trying with Rimmer Bros - they have several different ones listed and don't seem able to give dimensions, or usage details.

    P38 4.0SE 1997 - A/C condenser info request

That is actually my eBay listing for the o-rings that GEMS engines have for the joint between the compressor and the in/out pipes. I had to buy a load of them from Germany - should have got a mixed box back then.....

    P38 4.0SE 1997 - A/C condenser info request

They want the VIN or reg number, neither of which they can then find as it's a Japanese import. It uses a standard size P38 condenser, but it seems beyond their mental capabilities to work out what o-rings are needed. I'll get a kit.

Yes, they are made of NHBR (usually pale green) not plain rubber. But it's only £10 or so for a box of 270 (from Neilsen, a good make) so I think I'll buy a box-full, use what I need and then sell it almost complete on eBay....
