    TD4 Gearbox Bearing

I suspect I will have to be doing this soon as I am getting an odd noise I think from the box. I noticed on ebay its possible to buy a complete kit of all bearings and oil seals for about 180 quid.....thats a fair chunk of money, (could buy a used box for not much more) but I suppose it makes...

    Freelander 1 DIY TD4 Clutch

Oh, and you probably dont want to hear this but when I did mine, I found it easier to drop out the whole engine with box and IRD, then separate them on the ground.

    Freelander 1 DIY TD4 Clutch

Its possible, but its a bastard of a job without a ramp. The gearbox is very much heavier than an average FWD car, so not easy to manhandle. The subframe will need to come off. Its possible to leave the outer suspension, just undo the inner ends of the arms and that gives enough movement to...

Freelander 1 After putting on the front light guards

Puts pointless plastic ****e in front of headlamps. Wonders why they are dimmer than before. Anyway, if you want brighter bulbs, use Osram Nightbreakers.

Freelander 1 Would you use a freelander for a Bug Out Vehicle

What I mean is you need an engine that can cope with ****ty old diesel you have syphoned out of a generator you found on an abandoned farm. Modern common rail engines wont cope with that sort of thing long term.

Freelander 1 Would you use a freelander for a Bug Out Vehicle

LOL, no. If you are worried about a zombie apocalypse or breakdown of society, then you need a vehicle thats simple, robust, no electronics, can be fixed with basic tools and runs on old diesel. You need mechanical injection, not ECU controlled management. A 200TDi Disco if you want to keep it...

    Facelift instrument cluster repair

I got a second hand cluster in the end. I de-soldered LEDs from a scrap panel from a different Rover car. Maybe things would have gone better with new ones, but like you I didnt know what spec they should be and most places like aliexpress only sell loads of 50 or so.

    Facelift instrument cluster repair

I tried to do this; Total disaster. Ended up with a replacement cluster. I dont remember taking the needles off, but if you do need to, two teaspoons used as prybars under the hub will pull them off. iirc my soldering iron couldnt put enough heat into the right spot quickly enough to melt the...

Freelander 1 Td4, went a bit to deep!

Leave it in gear so it wont roll over you. Slide under the rear and clout the backplates with a hammer. Hard.

    Freelander 1 Winch bracket

Its designed for a later car with a larger bumper. A pet hate of mine is winches hanging out the front of the vehicle - it just looks terrible with the earlier bumper hacked away like that. Also that is their publicity photo, "modelling" the winch to sell to customers...bumper hacked away with...

    Freelander 1 Winch bracket

Jesus wept, that looks atrocious. They couldnt find pics of a neater installation to advertise them?

    Freelander 1 Aftermarket TPMS

I have yet to see a Laguna with working TPMS. If a manufacturer cant get them to last more than a year or two God knows how long some cheap Chinese aftermarket pish would last. I have no doubt that there are good, reliable systems available, but I bet they dont cost 50 quid.

Help save me smashing a window !

Cut a wedge shaped bit of wood. Pull out the top of the passenger door and push the wedge in to hold the gap open. Use another bit of wood to pry the door further open if you need and keep pushing the wedge in until there is a 2 or 3cm gap. Use a bit of stiff fence wire with a hook on it to...

Freelander 1 Possible to do away with the VCU?

Yeah.....no....maybe......dunno, really. Depends. My old Frontera had a LSD in the rear axle and while it was exceptionally capable off road, on tight turns or when parking it would lock up and was a pain in the chuff. Worst case was trying to reverse a heavy trailer round a corner, fighting...

Freelander 1 Possible to do away with the VCU?

Well, I guess its time for Landyzones monthly "I want to build a replacement for the VCU" thread. The short answer - No. Forget it. You are wasting your time and money. Longer answer - yes, you could. Literally anything is possible if you throw enough cash at it, but you are failing...

    Freelander 1 6 Tyres Instead of 5?

Until that model of tyre is replaced or otherwise unavailable and you have to throw out three good tyres.
  17. dave21478

    Freelander 1 6 Tyres Instead of 5?

You dont wait until they are half worn out before rotating, its preventative maintenance every couple of thousand miles, so there is no noticeable difference in depth between any of them. If you are wearing tyres to the point where there is significant depth differences between every 2k miles...

    Freelander 1 6 Tyres Instead of 5?

just do a basic 5 wheel rotation every couple of thousand miles. If you get a puncture that cant be repaired, buy a new tyre and keep it as the spare and then do a basic 4 wheel rotation. If you get another dead tyre, you are screwed, but two screws up any rotation pattern anyway, so no...

Suspected IRD issue. Someone tell me I'm wrong!

If money is tight and you are happy enough with 2wd for the meantime, remove the rear driveshafts. Split the outer CV joints and refit these in the rear hubs to hold the bearings together. The car will now be fine to drive. ABS light on will be from messing with fuses and unplugging things...

Suspected IRD issue. Someone tell me I'm wrong!

Fck the fuses. As GF21 says, kill the ABS system totally - unplug the modulator and see what happens. I would bet a reasonable sum of money its not an ABS fault. It will be a mechanical problem with the drivetrain. The abs light coming on is due to it detecting a sudden anomolous difference in...
