P38A P38 to Norway and back what spares to take next time?

Hi, Well having changed the rear diff 2 days before deciding to drive to Norway and back (3100 miles in 12 day). I had such an amazing visit thought I might go again next year. But whilst 1500 miles from home a breakdown was of some concern. So I thought about what bits to take next time. I...

    Noisy transmission

Hi Guys, Sorry for the time to get back to you but I have know done both the tests and the wheel turned slowly but steadily when checking the VCU. I did that a few weeks ago. Tonight I actually got around to dropping out the propshaft. There was a noticeable amount of movement and when I took...

    Noisy transmission

Grrrrrr, can I just take the prop off and drive around or do I need to tie anything up? Also Datatek, having just googled testing VCU it would appear jack up a front corner with hand brake on and try to rotate wheel, wheel should turn slowly, is that correct? Assume it will not turn if VCU...

    Noisy transmission

Hi, Thanks for all the input. I am sure it is a mechanical noise rather than tyres, no unusual vibrations just the whining noise. I did try to record it but nothing worth while. I experimented coming home and found it noisiest at 25mph in fourth with minimal throttle. Difficult to say where...

    Noisy transmission

Just the sound, I think, but will pay more attention tomorrow. She doesn't seem quite as smooth (obviously relative statement for a diesel) as she did before I did all the work. Also noticed when stopped the other day what felt like the transmission 'catching' whilst I had my foot on the...

Gearbox out and back in and few photos of things I did.

Yes it didn't help but couldn't easily get hold of a proper one over here..... Also been for a short drive this evening, fingers crossed all seems good. Clutch seems much easier to operate, bleed the brakes as well and peddle seems much firmer but I am going to take the tools out of the car...

Gearbox out and back in and few photos of things I did.

Hi all, thanks for the recent advice from a few weeks ago. I have since then taken out the gearbox and transfer box etc. The roll pins had broken! I have replaced the dmf with a second hand one, mine moved easily 3 teeth and the 'new' one moved just over a tooth. replaced the clutch...

Clutch problem: pins, clutch and gearbox, ideas and advice please

Thanks alll for the advice, especially Grrrrrr. That is really helpful and encouraging. Where replies for this thread had stopped I had started another thread about the bits I need to do the job. Why not replace the roll pins with a high tensile steel bolt? Is there not enough room? Thanks again

Hi Guys, thanks for the replies, Wammers that is the nub of my problem all that effort to get at the pins and then put the old one back, also the time issue of trying to get a second hand box over to Jersey. Clutch problem: pins, clutch and gearbox, ideas and advice please

Hi All, Sorry but I should have come and asked sooner. Imagine being in traffic on a step hill stuck in the school run, first day back at school. To crawl up the hill in the traffic I had put her in low range to gently climb the hill. Near the top put in to high range and move forward a...

Time to change clutch approaching: advice please

Thanks for the advice: So is there any preference for the make of clutch to fit? Will I need any special tools? (that's a lazy question I suppose as I should just load up RAVE).

Time to change clutch approaching: advice please

The thought was along the lines that the secondhand clutch might be a better quality item than can be had rather than a cheap reproduction new one. Was wondering if a larger specialist breaker would pick out better parts to sell on. Probably just wishful thinking on my part.
