It all depends what you are comparing the steering too. Compared to a modern car with rack and pinion then yes the steering is frightening. However the steering box on the Series 3 is meant to be adjusted by a mechanism under the drivers side wing and almost never is so frightening can often...

I wonder how long it will be until someone comes up with a commercially available electric conversion for older Land Rovers and we all begin ripping out the TDI's and dropping in electric motors? A vehicle that can be re-invented this way several times must be extremely green!

The suspension is std height but with 235/85 tyres. I would not describe the steering as tight, it has some play in it and is very light compared with a series, (one handed lock to lock stationary is no problem) I an running without a damper at the moment though.

Thanks for the reply. Yes you can feel it helping as you straighten up, and it is not really a problem. I actually took the steering damper off as I suspected it might be seized but it made little difference only the steering became lighter. If that's how it is I will just live with it.

My issue is that the wheels are straight as is the steering wheel but the indicator cancelling thingy is not in the correct place, to the left it cancels almost immediately to the right I have to turn the wheel nearly 180 degrees! I guess I need to go back to basics and set the whole lot up with...

Has anyone ever had major problems with burnt valves through using unleaded fuel? We ran a 2.25 petrol for 150k on unleaded with no mod or adatives, mixed use, so very heavy towing on the motorway, some commuting. Took the head off and no damage was visable and the engine still ran just as well...

Rough maths suggests that changing from a 1.4 to a 1.22 will give a 14% gain, which in reality will mean that at the revs you were doing at 70mph you will then be doing 80mph. Sounds like a reasonable gain.
