Ok so I have a very nice Honda, it's comfortable, fairly fast, costs little to run, never breaks down and is worth half the value of a decent land rover.
Why then do I prefer a drafty 90, that is slow, thirsty, noisey and most significantly rusts away as I sleep!!!
I took the rear body off what appeared to be a very sound chassis, two full days of cutting and welding and I think I am 70% of the way there. I am half deaf from the grinder, have burns all over my arms from the welding splatter (lot of the welding is upside down) ache in places I didn't know I have, and all for what?
The Honda sits there looking smug!
Hey if I can't rant here where can I rant.
Do I need to see a shrink?
 
When you find a good shrink can you pass us the number....first question ask them can they weld.

As for the Honda. It's good to have comfort once a week. Even posh cars I use I have to have the windows down.
 
Its the smell. Land rovers smell familiar, a satisfying combination of 30 years of wet dog, hot ep90, musty interior fabrics from the 80's, and a hint of damp farm yard. Every one of them smells the same. All of this means as soon as you get into one you know where you are and can comfortable sit back feeling happy.
It does not matter how hard they try modern cars do not have this confronting smell and never develop it. So the Honda will smell sterile and of chemical air fresheners.
 
My Land Rover addiction was caused by my father buying a series 2a when i was 7-8 years old and letting me watch him and my uncle work on it then he got a very early 90 when i was 12 and as I got older I was able to help with the repairs and the addiction fully took hold. Now I'm 40 and have owned my 90 Defender for 4 years and fully rebuilt it spending every last penny I could on it. I have spent more on the Defender than my everyday 2012 BMW 320D which has given me trouble free motoring 50mpg £30 a year road Tax yet I hate driving the BMW I see it only as a tool to munch motorway miles. The Defender is cramped, noisy, slow, leaky(despite best efforts to seal it) and gives me a sore back after a long drive but I absolutely love the it. It's my dream car. Maybe I should report my parents for cruelty as obviously their actions have led to my affliction.
 
It is bred into us, I have a new top of the range Volvo XC90 Inscription fully loaded with every extra and it can even drive semi autonomously, drive brake and stearing by itself. I also have my 14 year old Defender TD5, I drive my landy all the time if wife is not with me (she is a landy atheist and just does not understand) my grand kids would all travel in my Defender every time rather than my plush XC90 they love it and insist I pick them up from school in it so they look cool to their friends.
They even prefer the musty smell in my landy rather than the smell of new leather seats and dash etc in my Volvo. The kids must have got good DNA from my side. my wife on the other hand must be of bad blood stock.

I've had Series I's, II's IIA's III's and am now on me 1989 110 NAD, and still get cramps and aches where it wouldn't be thought possible, but she's MINE!! :cool:
The Distaff has a new Skoderie thingy, that is soul-less, and she want to convert to a petrol Landy ... silly woman!! :eek::eek:
She thinks that all doozils will be banned soon!! :rolleyes::rolleyes:

My story is very similar. When I was 12 my dad bought a nearly new Series 3 station wagon. I thought it was amazing, all my friends thought it was the coolest thing ever especially when it would go off road. It was not long until I was helping with the maintenance. Never was a vehicle so well maintained with all the fluids checked and topped up weekly. I would even take the drums off to check there was not a build up of dust and adjust the brakes every fortnight. Eventually my Dad had enough of me messing with his vehicle and bought me a Series 3 of my own to rebuild after I finished my exams. This I did and shunted it round the house until eventually the day came when I became 17.
Somehow I still prefer to be in a Land Rover even though it causes me pain fixing it, welding it, improving it.
 
I got into landys when I found (dead) deer do not fit well into the back of a 4x4 panda.

Mrs was given a S1 for her 14th birthday prezy from the parents so she could repair this when it breaks down.Still has this now.
