Yes pump timing can cause diesel knock if its to far advanced, however your does not look to be too far out. It's easy to set it right, so still worth a go just in case. Are you sure the knock isn't a big or little ends (conrod bearings) as towing up hill will put a huge load on the engine.

No gaskets needed, the flywheel locking pin goes in the bell housing drain hole, and the blanking plate for the pump has no gasket (unless it has a breather fitted).

Check the timing, paying close attention to the pump timing itself.

The LR wheel brace does this job nicely as the end sits on the chassis leg, but if you do try this please do it with the bonnet down just in case.
