Thanks lads. We've hit a problem, the RH vanos casing has a crack around the solenoid inside the thread so I need to locate a vanos unit asap. Any ideas?

Home stretch....... Has anybody got any simplified instructions for setting the vanos units to the stop position with a multimeter. Thanks.

I have a similar thought about work, I hate it but there's no better feeling than finishing after a long night. I'll be made up when it's done and the engine is the quietest BMW V8 I've ever heard. Wishful thinking lol but ye, I've got faith :rolleyes:

Lol, I'm replacing most of it because it's got 130k on it, not because it's broken..... Hopefully that's just the drivers side vanos seals. Didn't think there'd be much call for 2nd hand timing parts.

Thanks for that Mr HC, all part numbers have been passed on and all being well I should have the car back next week. My mechanic found this during the stripdown, I think the place that did the warranty work last year weren't very careful when they changed the water pump!

I know, cheap isn't it. I did get a price myself, it came to about £400 plus VAT for guides, chain, timing chain and cam chain tensioners. He's managed to get a mega discount on the bits and passed the savings on to me cos he's good like that. I'm happy till I get the total bill lol

Had a price for everything on the diagram except sprockets (still not sure about the crush washer but have asked to make sure it's included), the cost.... £298 all in from land rover (mechanic has a mate) so that's ordered, just gotta get it all put on now and I might get the car back next week...

The inlet manifold has been removed and refitted to aid oil leak diagnosis so Valley pan seals etc all done, PCV was done last year in an attempt to cure a smoking habit, didn't work, the smoke was coming off the exhaust manifold, not out of the pipes lol. What is the crush washer, is it on the...

Thanks mate, that's all I needed to know. The beisan seals have arrived and I've decided the chain can be done at the same time, I'm too deep into it now to be worrying about cost so it'll be genuine parts too. Anybody want to buy a kidney?

I was going to spend 2.5k on an engine so I suppose that's my budget but would like to get it done for less. I have labour costs to deal with as well so that has to be included in the total spend. If the vanos isn't a big tear down, I would prefer to tackle the chain and guides another time but...

Leave me out of it, I own a Range Rover remember so my problem cup is overflowing lol. Can't beat a good bit of banter, as for bringing a thread into disrepute, that happened as soon as HC turned up lol.
