    Oh and removing the thermostat is going to make your life easier. otherwise you'll not be able to circulate the whole system effectively.

    I've used Jizer and that worked great to clean up the oil. Obviously only need to run to warm and get it running through system for a short time then drain and flush a few times with water.

    a 200tdi will start without the glowplugs all day long, even in winter. Only in winter they'll help it start easier that's all they do in the uk. Really cold places I'd think only then you'd need them. Some people have said they run 200tdi's without the glowplugs

    battery volts when running ? should be around 14v. For the record my alternator isn't that strong but good enough, just about, but when I use full headlights etc it depleted the battery and the alternator for some reason won't keep up. Could be on it's last legs like mine.

    FBH ? I truthfully would think that you'd get better mpg due to the colder denser air, but i guess when you look at the bigger picture it makes sense for it to be less as mentioned above.

    could it be i wonder the oil getting too hot, thinning out and getting past the seals ? Could this issue be related to the oil thermostat being closed shut in some way ? having been run in summer did you notice more smoke on hot days ? Maybe worth investigating
