Chassis painting

I'm picking up my new galvanised series 2 chassis from Richards on Tuesday. I'm going to t wash it and brush paint it in corroless Cs primer then rf16 top coat, they advised I don't need to etch prime after the t wash, not sure if that's correct? Can anyone advise

Not sure about that. I assume you mean Corroless S1?

I use it quite a lot, and it is an excellent paint, however, I can't say I have ever tried it on galv, which is a notoriously difficult surface to paint.
A lot of people don't paint galv chassis, some just do the rear crossmember for a more original appearance.
Most that do paint them seem to use mordant wash, then etch or special metals primer, followed by topcoat or chassis black.

I may be talking rubbish here, but I did a little research on this when I received my Richards chassis in the summer.

Isn't that a rust-stabilising paint? Would you really need that on a new galvanised chassis? I would have thought Corroless M (Multi-Metal Primer) would be more appropriate.

I used Rust-Oleum 3202 Galvinoleum Primer when I did mine - weird stuff, like painting with really thin glue. Didn't etch-prime, but I did give the it a quick going over with Scotchbrite. Seems to have worked reasonably well, but since it's still a long way from being on the road, I really don't know how well it's going to stand up to (ab)use! I'll look at using Corroless when it needs patching!

Are you planning on washing it with Ammonia?

The other thing I heard is that the more weathered the galvanised surface, the better. Their chassis really are very shiny when new, so if you have time to let it sit outside a while before you need to paint it, that might also help. You've picked a better time of year for it than I did!

It is a rust stabilising paint, which is why I said I had never heard of anyone using it on Galv.

And I am not rebuilding anything. I fact, I haven't owned any kind of Land Rover for 3 years!

I thought you were suggesting @rich201283's reference to Corroless C was actually supposed to be Corroless S1. I didn't find 'C' on their web site, but 'M' looked like a more appropriate choice than S1.

And the 'good luck' comment was actually directed at @rich201283 - I assume he's about to rebuild on his new chassis.

Nope. I was suggesting that I had never heard of Corroless Cs primer, but I have heard of Corroless S1, because there is a 5 litre tin in my boat, and I have often used it, both on farm machinery and boats.

If you want to direct a comment at him, try quoting him instead of me!

Sorry I meant corroless s, I've found a couple of people using this combination of the primer and topcoat on land rover chassis which are galvanised on various forums

I actually contacted corroless about what would be best to use on my galv chassis and the recommendation was from them was "The Corroless M dries matt to a red/brown finish. You can over coat with RF16 which is a very tough glass leaf flake reinforced top coat and dries to a gloss finish. We can tint to most colours. " Both of my chassis are "old" so are no longer shiny new galv, but if you t-wash first you will be in the same position.

mordant wash (T wash) then paint it with epoxy paint primer and topcoat.

I used etch primer first and then epoxy primer along with it's topcoat. Penguard and Hardtop.
Despite not having any problems with flaking or anything i wish i'd t-washed it instead but etch primer was a lot quicker for me at the time.
